Hey everyone. I was just wondering if any other 5 speed transmission would work in my 99 3.4 4x4? Mine pops out of first violently, accompanied by grinding if you try to hold it in gear. This happens almost instantly after trying to take off, every time. Been trying to find an r150f but the only ones I've found are pretty expensive. I will probably end up buying a rebuild kit for it. Has anyone done it without a press? Thanks guys/girls.

    Where does your truck live?

What price do you figure is expensive?

You have ruled out a shifter bushing and seat failure ?

The press is only piece of the different tools you need.Your covered for the internal and external snap ring pliers , Gear pullers of different sizes Dial Indicator assorted pin punches.

What is your plan if you find a gear or 2 with damage or a bad bearing has destroyed a shaft?

Yes shifter seat and bushing are ruled out, that is the first thing I checked. I have all tools besides a press, but I have access to one but it's about an hour drive from me.

I am no pro at what else would fit as I always fixed what came out of the original truck . I think it would cost you double trying to make another trans fit in place of yours .

These are very simple transmissions to fix once you split the transmission case . I would be curious to see the condition of your 1st and 2nd shifter fork
Lower in the first thread , you will find the overhaul manual for your transmission plus a few links to others who have rebuilt these in the past

Sorry for very late reply everyone. Bivouac, sadly according to youre location we are pretty far from each other. On another note, I have decided to pull the transmission and tear it down to try to find what's going on with it. I didn't get far today, pulled the driveshafts and drained the tranny and tcase oils. I'm hoping it's just the shift fork that's worn, but idk for sure. It has zero problems in every gear besides 1st.

Today I tore down the transmission, I can't see anything in the gears, bearings or synchros that would be causing this issue. Honestly it looks like it's been gone thru before. Shift forks look fine, synchros don't look worn, and the bearings seem fine. I decided to the clutch and flywheel. No major damage there. Only thing I did notice was discoloration on the transmission side of the pressure plate. Throw out bearing spins good, but is slightly loud. Any thoughts? I planned on replacing the clutch as a part of this repair, but I'd hate to put the transmission back in and find out it wasn't just the clutch.

Detents hold the transmission in the gear you selected
Interlocks prevent 2 gears at the same time .
If your shifter forks are good , your going to wanna pop your detents and interlocks out and inspect them for wear . Take pictures with your phone as you remove them so you know how to put them back .
Make sure the transmission remains in nuetral when you play with the interlocks and detents .You will need a pen magnet to remove them .
Find a manual or book that has a good description of your detents and interlocks .
    Hows the shifter bushing ?
Pop some pictures and post them up .

If the shift forks are good , I am wondering about your end play . When you accelerate , all the gearing on the mainshaft is thrusted towards the rear of the transmission case .
All the gearing on your counter shaft is thrusted towards the front of the transmission case

There isn't much play at all everything seems pretty tight. I did pull the detent out to remove the shift rod and forks so I could get a good look at them. I'm not sure what the interlock is ill have to figure that out. I can take some pictures and I can also try to get some video of the play in it. The shifter bushings are new.

Ok I take that back. There is some play in the counter shaft. Also, how much play should the input shaft have? It has quite a but of in-out play, and also side to side and up and down.

End play adjustments are In the overhaul manual . You always need some play to allow for heat expansion of metal parts .
If you can feel the play , you got too much play . I believe the adjustment is between 4 to 8 thousandths. The book knows better than my memory lol

Ok I had the transmission rebuilt by a local place here that only rebuilds manual transmissions, and only imports. Only question I have is on the shop told me to use 10/40 oil. Have you guys heard of this before?

I had a trans rebuilt recently and they suggested 10/30 synthetic. I stuck with the tried and true MT90 and it's running just fine.

Did you bother to ask them what they found?? I had this trans do the same thing and it probably started off as a bad bushing and shifter seat but every time it pops out it damages something. When taken apart the shafts certainly have play in and out and sideways because the shaft is then only supported on one end and there's no housing to support the other end, just curious what they found. When I was a kid a local trans shop (I knew the owners son and all the mechanics well) charged a guy 600$ to fix his 85 Toyota 4x4 and we pulled a countershaft out of a burnt truck we found in the pits to fix it! They literally did barely anything on that transmission, that was back in 1989...

This shop recommended 10/40 non synthetic, said the synthetic stuff can sometimes do more harm than good since it's more slippery. DC923T, it ended up being a mixture of the 1-2 shift fork, the slider, and some bearings. I'm going to run 10/40 as recommended by the rebuilder, just so I dont risk voiding the 1yr warranty.

Nice! We often can't see the obvious wear on something although it may still be out of spec. It's great that you fixed it before it ruined any gears or synchros, that would add to the bill a bit. I've seen quite a few guys let a manual pop out a zillion times before they even try the bushing/socket fix and by then it's often too late. Oddly enough it seemed to always be 1st gear but and city driving uses 1st more than anything else. Transmissions popping out of gear are one of those things that make you sick to your stomach, praying it was a one time event, rarely is...

Got it all together and is working good. Only thing that's kind of annoying is when I push in/let off the clutch, there's a hissing type sound. No air leaks, I don't think it's the new master or slave cylinder. I think it's the new throwout bearing.
