Howdy all, as much as I like a performance sound, the Carven exhaust was just a bit too much for me. It’s a very well made exhaust system, and when you are WOT, it’s pretty cool….but call me lame, I needed to tone it down some. I decided on a resonator from Vibrant (13”) on Amazon for about $100. I also purchased an inexpensive exhaust pipe expander for about $25 to ensure I had proper fit.

The exhaust note is now incredible, much less “raspy”, and it doesn’t sound like a Honda racer boy fart can. Some pics of the install. Took me about a hour in total.

Why didn’t you just put your stock exhaust back on?

The exhaust flows a lot more freely, just needed to tone it down, stock exhaust is very restrictive and boring. Resonators are a pretty normal add on for a little noise reduction without effecting flow.

    Have you measured the “flow”?

Maybe he still wanted the sound of an aftermarket exhaust, just not as loud. You know, what he said in the the original post?

@reconrover good call. I did the same on mine. Although I didn’t have those fancy pipe stretching tools like you so I had to weld mine. Worked out though. Toned it down a little.

Now that we’ve had a few days to drive it with the resonator, very happy. You can still tell it’s a performance exhaust, but it’s lost the asthmatic dachshund sound common amongst Auto Zone workers with Civics with the red anodized “racing” tow hooks, and 6” hose Clamped fart can appendage.

Sorry, I still laugh at loud trucks that aren't fast at all. Just embarrassingly loud, and slow on takeoff.

Thread is useless without sound clips IMO.

The stock 3.5 is restrictive and boring. Lol

I just had a Carven TR installed and love the deep noise it gives but I'm going to likely make quick enemies with my neighbors and the ol lady thinks it's too loud. Do you happen to have a recording of how it sounds now?? I thought the resonators are primarily for reducing drone and rasp opposed to quieting the system in general?
Which vibrant model did you get?

What's the model and part # of the resonator you used?

As much as I love my truck it's the last vehicle I would put an exhaust on. They are simply not a good sounding engine

I did the same thing, went with a carven TR as the kit seemed pretty popular but it was obnoxiously loud at cold startup or heavy acceleration. Sounded 3/4 of the way to being straight piped and like my Tacoma wanted to be a muscle car.

I put the ultra quiet in front of it and while I sadly lost a bit of the deeper tone and bass, it tones it down substantially. It sounds more like a performance vehicle now opposed to an obnoxiously loud challenger. I also think my neighbors will be overall happier. I'm pretty content with how it sounds compared to stock.

It also near eliminated the drone and rasp of the TR.

Sounds a bit better under acceleration and idle now with an OTT.

Mine sounds pretty good with the Borla Y-Pipe and MF Overland, but to each their own.

Good work OP. Looks like that will be a solid upgrade to the Carven.
