Am I correct in thinking that if I disconnect the Qi button (in the off position), tape up the end, and shove it in the dash, I don’t have to worry about it ever turning on?

I don’t use the Qi charger and never plan on using it, so I’d like to put something else in its place. However, I’d like to ensure that it never turns on by itself. I know certain items left on top of Qi chargers (metal and whatnot) can cause issues. Considering I leave random crap in that cubby down there, I’d like to make sure it will never turn on accidentally.

If anyone can confirm that would be great!

I wouldn’t think you’d even have to tape up the connector

can’t confirm but the logic seems there

Yeah. I hear ya. I always throw tape over the end of connectors to be safe tho. With my luck I’d hit a pothole the wrong way and it would activate the teleportation function. Lol

I have an old ipod 80gb laying in there and have never had an issue. Funny because my iPhone 8 can charge with that but I never use it

Do you have the charger turned on? If it’s turned on I’ve always read not to place anything metal, magnets, or wiring on top of it (other than phones).

Yeah, I’m the guy who takes warning labels too seriously. Haha

I have an iPhone XS and never use it. Charges too slow and I’ve read on here people have issues with it not being reliable and/or starting to bubble.

No. I think I tried it once and never use it and leave it off.
I probably wouldn’t put stuff there if it was on all the time.

Were you going to wire it to Ben always on?

No. I was going to completely disconnect it and leave it off permanently. Basically I want to open up another switch hole down there and figured that was the simplest way since I never use it anyways.

More or less just wanting to make sure it’s not gonna mysteriously turn on by itself with the button unplugged and then blow up bc I set something metal on top of the charger.

Thought about getting one of Meso’s replacement ones with additional holes, but don’t want to have to hack that up to swap them out. From what I remember reading you have to cut the old one out and epoxy the new one in. I’m OCD and it would never be perfect enough for me.

You should be able to disconnect the switch in the on or off position and it will lose power (assuming it's just a toggle switch which it should be).

I'm not sure why you would want to though, seeing as phones in the next 2 years are going to have no ports.

I pulled my switch three years ago and stuffed the connector behind the panel, no issues. Put a front camera switch in its place.

Wireless charging has a long way to go before they’ll remove wired charging. It’s not nearly as reliable, or as fast, as it needs to be in order to be the SOLE method of charging. It will happen eventually, just not in the next couple of years.

And if it does, the charger in our trucks would have to be upgraded to the newest standards anyways to be any faster than it currently is.

With that said, if by some miracle it does happen soon (which I’m all for) I can just pop the button back in and be good to go! :)

Cool. Sounds like there shouldn’t be an issue then. Thanks for confirming you haven’t had any issues!

    Flurry of replies!!

If you want to put your ocd to the grave on it, pop the dash apart or pull the switch out with the harness still plugged into it, then put your phone there and turn the charger on......pull the harness and see if the phone stops charging.

Here’s the schematic. All you are doing is removing the switch M7 which means the charger will never get powered up.

It might come sooner than you'd expect.

The next iPhone is supposed to be wire-free. Apple does not want to change their designs to use USB-C (as required by the EU), so the next logical step is to use their current-magnetic-wireless charging dongle thing across all product-lines to reduce their "E-Waste". My money is on 2021 or 2022. The good news is it's relatively easy for apple to create and sell wireless-carplay adapters, so fingers crossed.

Why must you be so logical! Lol

Thanks! I’ll give that a shot tomorrow. I figured it wouldn’t be an issue, but never hurts to ask and save myself some headache

I’m all for it when it happens. Wires get on my nerves, but super slow charging speeds are more annoying. Especially when you’re using GPS or Spotify and the wireless charger can’t even keep your phone at the same percentage, let alone increase the charge level.

I'm probably never going to use the wireless phone charging but I'm figuring the capability should be there in case of possible resale. (Same goes for the Sirius XM radio.)

Wireless charging, it's far from perfected. Why it's included as a "feature" on any vehicle, snake oil. And we pay for it.
    The technology is there, wired.
When technology can cook my dinner as requested, I'll provide the knob.
Fast charging has not made it's debut in the household, and likely will not for years.

    Hehe, dinner:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5mUZED58YMI

Joking aside, wireless charging IS here, the issue is with the current implementation and consumers.

    Ratings:
iPhone 12 USB Wattage (input): 5 Watts
iPhone 12 Fast Charge Wattage (input): 20 Watts
iPhone 12 Wireless Charging Mag Safe: 20 Watts

Most (Common) 2-Amp USB Chargers: 10 Watts (max)
Wireless Mat (QI 1.0): 5 Watts
Wireless Mat (QI 1.2.3): 5-30 Watts

The issue isn't the technology, it's the products the consumers are buying. The technology to wirelessly charge faster than standard USB chargers has been here since 2015. Most quality wireless chargers cost $10-30 and will charge at the same rate as "fast chargers". The Tacoma probably has a 5-10 watt (equal or less power than the cheapest "useable" USB charger on the market) wireless charger but has to struggle with wireless communications (music) and GPS while attempting to charge.

(+/-) 5 watts for inductive charging loss.
