I concur. I checked my shelf stock and had a Purolator Boss filter and inspected the louvers and they were 95% blocked. Not even opened. Dont even think of using these filters. Had one "Classic" filter and all were open albeit small openings. Also had one "Pure One" and they were all open and small but inside was full of particles. All junk. Will never buy Purolator again!

I'm not one to get excited about an oil filter on a well maintained vehicle. Fresh oil and a filter every 5K or so IMO eliminates the need for the fancy stuff. If you are going to push the oil/filter change cycle out to 15 - 20K then maybe you could convince me that the fancy filter and synthetic oil make sense. That said, when the OEM filter is vastly superior and less expensive than pretty much anything else you can buy the decision is a complete no brainer. I mean really what filter, at any price, comes pre-lubed and sealed? And, I don't know if the new drain washer comes with the filter or my dealer throws them in,

You're right, my dealer is about 20 miles away. Wal-mart 3 miles, Advance Auto 1/2 of a mile. Next time it WILL be a OEM D3. I take better care of that truck than I do myself! :D

Do you happen to know when this switch Wix->Mann (I knew those were junk)/ Hummel (never heard of) occurred timeframe wise?

I personally use the D3's on my Tacoma but would like to know for other vehicles in the fleet. TIA.

I'm not sure, but I do know it's been at least a year. Baldwin filters for the fleet. That's what I use, no problems.

I thought the Mobil 1 oil filters were good, or at least were the best aftermarket filters and comparable to the Toyota filters? The M1-209 filter is the same size as the factory Toyota filter and fits fine even if Mobil 1 says it won't work. Does anyone know of any reviews that actually measure the filtration of the filters for a better comparison? I've been using the Mobil 1 filters since I can get them on Amazon. I'm not finding where people are buying Toyota filters for $3.99 anywhere

I know Fram is junk, and most other brands don't stack up too well to factory filters. I didn't know any better when I first started changing my own oil back when I drove a Nissan pickup. I used Fram filters and dino oil. It went from burning no oil at 90k miles to burning a quart every 3-4 thousand miles at 190k miles, and only had a 3 quart oil pain. I switched to a higher weight synthetic and Mobil 1 filters then, and only burned a quart every 4-5k because of the heavier weight. The oil was pitch black after 3k but got cleaner with every change. It was burning the exact same amount of oil when I sold it at 250k.

I use mobil1.. but recently... I have switched to the KN ones.. why? Not because of the integrated nut that makes removal easy. I have a filter wrench. but the fact that they give u a window mileage sticker and mobil doesnt. I know it's a small detail..but it makes remembering when I changed it easier....

OEM on both of my Toyotas. Someone a few years back did a comparison of oil filters here on Tacoma World. Might try a search, cant remember the members name that did it.

Yeah, I saw that. It's a little outdated now. I've been using OEM D1 & D3's since I bought the truck. I usually buy Mobil 1 at Wal-Mart, so I thought I'd try the Fram Ultra. It's a good filter. In this case, I would have been better off with the Fram "orange can of doom", lol! Next time I'll buy OEM. Oh well, live & learn. This is the first time of all the thousands of filters I've changed, that I had a problem. Not one defect, but two. Purolator used to be a good filter. Not anymore.

I have to worry about Hurricane Matthew, now. :(

Thanks guys for all your input. Just wanted let you know, so you don't make the same mistake I did. At the very least, give any filter you use the 'once over' before putting on your truck!

Man, what an *emotional* thread. Rightfully so, I suppose. We obviously all love our trucks and like to think we take the best care of them possible. I will, however, play devils advocate and state that I'm waiting for someone with some professional experience to chime in. Professional experience meaning someone who's had a hand in engineering and lubrication systems of automobiles. Sorry, even an opinionated pro wrench with years of experience is just that...opinionated. I want to see actual hard data, not just "I took it apart, this is what it looks like to me and you're an idiot if you don't see it the same way." I realize that the obvious flaw in producing such data is that it would be a multi million dollar study by the time man hours, materials and equipment are factored in; not likely to happen in this lifetime.

I guess the thing thats the most puzzling to me is the disparity between the common belief that Toyota is reckless when it comes to the recommended service interval for the ATF change yet at the same time they are super on point with their oil filter technology. I mean, christ, can someone please explain to me the consistent logic when comparing those two? I use FRAM; do I think it's the best? No. Do I know what the best is and why? No. Do you? I'm not convinced so by a number of people cutting open used oil filters that they put 6500 miles on and calling the filter garbage. Yes, I realize that most of those folks didn't put that kind of mileage on them. It's just takes one to make me question the entire basis of logic. If you're so concerned about the wellbeing of your truck, change the fucking oil at 5000 miles(or less) before bashing the manufacturers for making a "garbage" product. You can call them a shit company and they can call you a shit owner. In the old days cars weren't supposed to go more than 3000 miles without changing the oil. Yes, the technology in oil has changed tenfold in the last 30 years, but still, even modern lubricants break down.

I just still can't get over the belief that OEM filters are heads above the rest based on a bunch of people cutting open new and used filters. On the one hand "Toyota doesn't care if your transmission fails" because of a variety of stated claims that I won't go into but at the same time their oil filters were secretly designed and built by NASA...and sold for a couple bucks when you buy 10. Look at how many recalls they have had because of common sense shit that shouldnt have been overlooked(frame rust, just to name one). They have ZERO issues with quality control and engineering oversights, right? The logic just doesn't jive to me.

Don't get me started on the Royal Purple diehards. I'll just say this: look at what you spend on oil changes on even the low end life expectancy of the motor. Now crunch the numbers for doing the same but using wally world or reconditioned oil. That dollar figure is about enough to build a 500+HP NA motor AND rent a truck to drive while you build it. I just don't get it. Lose sleep at night over the thought of your truck locking up because you didn't use RP oil? Fine. RP loves you and they're so happy that some people are still investing in a reputation that was built in an era when a fuel injected vehicle was considered newfangled.

Thats all for now. I'll get off my soapbox. Flame away...something tells me I'll wish I hadn't given this topic that much mental space.

I did some searching and it looks like the only "tests" that claim that the OEM filters are the best are coming from a single post...one that is on a 4runner forum and has been reposted here. There are lots of online articles and other forum threads on the topic, but none of them claim the OEM filter is best...just that it's well made with good flow. A test done by Amsoil (biased I'm sure, but probably not complete rubbish either) shows pretty bad efficiency. It sure has a lot of filter media, and most people are claiming it's a "flow over effciency" design. Lots of people are saying it's made by Denso too. I don't think the OEM filter is bad, but I think there is some validity to the argument that cutting the filters open to see inside doesn't show how well they filter, just how well they are constructed and how much media they have in them. Maybe efficiency doesn't matter because really tiny particles don't hurt your engine? I don't know. I do know that I would never use any of the tiny filters that are listed for the 1GRFE at parts stores though.

    Too few to list.
I think cutting it apart just shows the construction of the filter with design and parts used. In the end, use whatever you like, its your truck.
