    A few months ago my new Tacoma with under 15k miles at the time started to develop this odd metal on metal noise that only happened in reverse. It’s a pulsing type noise, indicating for me that the drivetrain is rubbing on something.

    Initially, it was hard to reproduce the issue for the tech, but it became much more often and they were able to hear it. My dealership filed for the TSB related to the mis-manufacturing of the rear axles (don’t have the service paperwork in front of me to know the exact number). Unfortunately, that repair did not fix it, only a few days later I heard it again. It’s since become worse and happens on every reverse.

    Now my truck is at the dealership again today for the head level tech to file a claim with Toyota and try and get this figured out. Anyone have any experience with this?

    Video of noise:

    Is there a clown with a kazoo by your spare tire? I've never seen this. Luckily you're under warranty

    For real...Been to the service center 6 times now for this same reason, glad it's under warranty but it's super inconvenient since I use it for work :( at first I thought it was from the rear but tbh I can't tell now it just comes from the underside.

    Make sure they give u a Tacoma as a rental. Try to follow up whenever they find out what it is! Could be anything really, brakes dragging, a dragging shifting fork, bent driveshaft who knows

    Forgot to mention I only have wheels and tires, no lift, so it couldn’t be due to raising the vehicle. I plan on regearing and lifting but not til this is figured out!

    Dealership hasn’t even bothered to offer a loaner, at VW customers always got them. Pretty disappointed with the level of service but hey so long as it gets fixed oh well.

    Just got this from my service advisor:

    It's Jennifer from Toyota. Toyota wants us to replace your rear brake drums. I guess they've seen machining issues where the hub goes in to the drum and the measurements on yours are not in spec. I have a set in stock so Brian will be replacing them and we will be done by the end of the day.

    Fingers crossed this actually is the solution

    I had a similar sound. Turned out to be a bent heat shield that was rubbing on the axle. Super thin metal. Probably knocked out of place by a large rock.

    @zDirtyDeedz

    I had the exact same issue on my Tacoma roughly 500 miles after I drove it off the lot. Turned out to be an issue with one of the brake shoes. Very similar noise and only in reverse. Dealership was very prompt in correcting the problem. My repair only involved cleaning of the drum and dressing one of the brake shoes. Has never done it again. Now have 16 500 miles on truck.

    Thanks for the reply JNG. Starting to sound like rear drums are the issue here too, hopefully it's that simple. I'll make sure to update the thread once I get her back.
