Driving with a friend earlier this week, we got pulled over in his Lancer for tinted tail lights. which is out of the norm because most officers in FL have bigger things to worry about. Not tonight.. I was redoing my tail lights because they were fading and didnt realize the more you wet sand them..the darker they can be. I put 4 coats of VHT Nightshades and didnt bother testing them out... Now this is my 3rd time tinting them and can barely be seen. So i got pulled over doing 47 in a 45, when the officer came up and told me my tail lights were out. We sat there one by one and pushed the brake to show me you could barely see the lights. He also informed me of the $150 dollar fine and increase in insurance (my biggest fear for being a teenager) and that if i was rear-ended, i would be at fault because i didnt have clearly visable brake lights. So no more tinted tail lights for me! Anyone selling a pair of good looking stock lights?

Can you sand off the nightshade stuff, polish the plastic, and clear-coat it?

im sure i could..but the point of tinting them was to get rid of the stock look. and id rather just buy another pair, honestly.

it just takes less than an hour of your time for removing the VHT. well worth it than buying another set. IMO > that sucks, 150 fine or is this a fix it ticket? just want to know because i am moving to florida and my tails are smoked with 2 light coats of VHT.

I thought about tinting my stock tail lights, then I also thought about all the repercussions like what the officer told you. So I got aftermarket tail lights that have black housing, they're even brighter than my stock tail lights so no problems there.

I've been checking out those tail lights on ebay! but they say they only fit an 05-09 prerunner.. but not the base model. I have an 09 reg cab base and they should fit shouldnt they?
And as for everyone else.. i never got written a ticket. the officer said they usually dont mind when people tint their lights, but the fact that he had me pulled over he reminded me it was a 98 dollar fine for driving without lights on. (even tho my headlights were on) So i think anyone with tinted taillights in florida should be okay...

No reason why PreRunner taillights wouldn't work in a base model. They're the same thing far as I know.

Wouldn't a taillight ticket be considered a non-moving violation, thus no impact on insurance premiums?

Props to the OP for NOT asking to borrow tail lights or whining about the ticket.

Someone needs to sticky this thread. Tinting your lights is such a terrible idea, tails or otherwise. It has absolutely no practical benefit. If you're going to mod them, make them BRIGHTER if anything.

And, just my $.02, nice-looking aftermarket tails are extremely few and far between IMHO.

But everybody has their preferences. This thread is just proof that mods like that are NOT a good idea.

Another person talking about getting pulled over for tinted tail lights...... If you tint your tail lights to a point where they are so dark light can't shine through then you are making people driving behind you at risk.... It's just like driving with no tail lights at all.

X2 on getting tail lights with A black housing, it looks good and it's legal...

Here's a thought I understand it looks cool to have your tail lites tinted, but put yourself in my shoes, I drive a big truck and when you have tinted tail lites and go to stop I might not see them as previously stated and if I don't see the break lites and run over you my first response is to tell the HP that I didn't see any lites working, now your dead and I feel terrible about killing you and you have just ruined my life also.
    Sorry for the rant.
    Be careful out there.

They should fit your base model, I couldn't imagine them not fitting, but I'm not 100% sure. Here's a link to where I got mine- http://www.amazon.com/311042-Toyota...e=Toyota|76&Year=2009|2009&newCar=1&carId=001
