    Full disclosure: I probably rushed it a bit doing a quick flat change, due to pouring rain, being on the side of the highway, etc and it probably wasn't fully seated on the nut when I started trying to rotate it off. Lesson learned.

    Yep. Thin wall sockets are prone to splitting when overloaded/stressed.
