I have a 4x4 TRD Off Road Double Cab with Goodyear Wranglers (came on the truck).

May seem like a dumb question, but what pressure info is best to follow? The tires say 51 psi max, the tire pressure monitor says they are about 36 psi and inside the door says 30 psi.

How do you decide what the proper pressure should be? This is for standard driving, not off road.

    Thanks.

30psi is the cold tire pressure. Mine heat up to 33 to 36 depending on the temperature. 51 is the max load the tire is capable of safely but you never inflate it to that pressure.

Well you definitely don't need to be close to the max, but I've been keeping mine around where the door says, which is 29 psi.

That being said, when I first got it from the dealer it was around 40 psi all around and around 35 psi after they got done with the 5k service. Maybe they think that's right?

I'm going to keep with the 29 psi cold, since it jumps up ~4 psi once the rubber warms up. And also because I think the max rating for my tires is just above 40 psi and it's not good for the tires to run that high for long periods.

Do you need to know, or care?
My opinion is that the Toyota Engineers did a lot of work calculating things like truck weight, MPG, rolling resistance, tire wear, handling characteristics, safety, etc to come up with the recommended tire pressure that's printed on that sticker on your door for your given set of tires.

I keep mine at the recommended pressure.

Never set a tire based on the pressure on the side of the tire. If the tires are the ones that came on the truck, go by the sticker on the truck.

They are usually inflated to 38-40 for transport. Follow the door placard. If it states 30 cold then thats where you should be.

I noticed that you did not post the SIZE of the tire-- if you want even wear--do the hand test--Hot on the sides-NOT enough pressure.
Hot just in the center--to much. Even heat across the tread-- you will have even wear. This check can be done after about 15M of driving.

35 PSI all around. Good balance between economy, wear, ride. Everyone's entitled to my opinion.

I am able to calculate a lowest pressure at wich the tires are save for the speed you drive.
At the bottom I will give text I saved with what you need to give me .

But the 51 psi is the maximum allowed cold pressure by the tiremaker.
the 35 is for standard load tires ( wich you probably have) the cold pressure at wich the maximum load of tire can be carried up to mostly 99m/h , whithout overheating any part of the rubber getting that hot that it hardens and crackes in next bendings/deflections.

LT tires only give that pressure on sidewall mostly like this "maximum load xxx lbs AT yyy psi( cold)" and the maximum cold pressure is higher.

the 30 psi advice of carmaker, is calculated for the Gross axle weight ratings , but nowadays also some savety margin , to cover the asses of tire and car-makers.

    Here the text I promessed.

Tirepressure advice is all about load on tire and speed ( and sometimes about alighnment - camber angle).

So if you can give details of car and tires , I can calculate an advice pressure with some reserve for things like, pressure-loss in time, unequall loading R/L, incidental extra load, misreadings of pressure scales, and misyudging of weight, etc.

This is from tires next and can be read from sidewall:

    Maximum load or loadindex.

Kind of tire to determine the AT-pressure/pressure needed for the maximum load up to maximum speed of tire, or if lower 160km/99m/h/reference-pressure, wich is not the maximum pressure of tire.

Maximum speed of tire, most given as letter ( Q=160km/99m/h,N=140km/86m/h fi)

If you have offroad or tires looking like that , with large profile blocs that cover a part of sidewall, also mention, they are allowed lesser deflection then a normal road tire, then the tire maker used to determine the maximum load (to my conclusion the case for the Bridgestone tires on Ford Explorer in the Ford/Firestone affaire).

If you cant find all of it give sises of tire and Loadkind, then I will google for it.

From car next and mostly can be found on same plate as the original pressure advices:

GAWR and GVWR ( Gross Axle/Vehicle Weight Rating)

But best would be to determine the real weights in your use on seperate tires or estimate it as acurate as possible, by weighing per wheel(pair) or axle.

Maximum speed , you dont go over for even a minute in your use, eventually different for different situations, for instance when towing or fully loaded. This apart from trafic regulations, if you drive faster then allowed give that speed. Nature punnisches with tire-failure, police only with a penalty.

Give all that and I will calculate and give a picture of one of my filled in spreadsheets in my answer.

If other then original tires, indead as is already answered other advice is needed, a stiffer tire ( fi C-load instead of P-tire) needs a higher pressure for the same load, or the other way around, has lower loadcapacity for the same pressure.

    Greatings from a Dutch pigheaded self-declared tire-pressure-specialist.

Had my 4x4 TRD Off Road Double Cab in for it's 5,000 miles service. The service sheet said they adjusted the tire pressure to the recommended 35psi. Well the plate on the door says 30psi so is the dealer wrong as usual or do I not know something?

    Everything stock.

    Thanks!

They cranked mine way up too. I brought it down to about 32 when I got home knowing that it was getting colder and it wouldn't stay at 32 for very long as the garage gets colder every day.

Mine rolled off the lot at 27 Lbs.. at 5K dealer up'd em to 36 - 38. I evened them all out at 37 lbs cold. My GYW adventure's say 51 psi max... I'm thinking of dropping them down to 32 cold..

Seems pretty straight forward, the manual says air up to the psi on the door plate yet the dealer adds 5 extra pounds. It drives me crazy whenever you go to a dealer, quicklube, etc., and they adjust your tires to spec while they are warm. They should know better.

Anyway, just wanted to double check in case the Off Road specified something the others didn't.

that line in reynolds and reynolds or ADP is pre-typed for all vehicles. they dont have it set for each specific vehicle. tech probably set them a bit high because we honestly dont want you coming back to bitch in 5 days when the low tire light comes on. besides, 35 PSI wont harm your tires or ride quality, and it will provide slightly better fuel economy. very slightly.

Sure if you have a softer tire it will be a smoother ride and harder you get better gas mileage, but the door jam is just a recomendation. I run whatever the tire manufacturer says on the sidewall.
