Just wanting feedback of a good asking price for my Tacoma.

This is technically my wife's truck (15 years+). Her dad got it before she had received her drivers license and has driven it since then. We just don't use it much and I have a larger GM truck that I drive to work daily. So, we have made a tough decision to sell the Tacoma.

    1999 Tacoma XtraCab SR5 2.7L Auto 4WD

    Currently:
    254,xxx miles
    2012 Wheels
    Original Engine & Trans
    New windshield (Installed 8/21)
    New Radiator
New Drivers Seat Belt (installed 8/21)
    New door checks (installed 8/21)
    Aftermarket Radio & Speakers (Pioneer)

Has a few bumps & bruises around the tailgate but nothing major.

Located in Georgia if anyone may be interested in purchase once a price is determined

    Thanks,
    Brandon

    I'd say $7,500 - $8,500 would be reasonable.

    That's highly variable.

It's only worth what someone is willing (and *able*) to pay for it. That could be anywhere between $4k and $12k, or more with the right buyer. A bunch of us bozos who don't live near you and aren't looking to buy a truck right now aren't going to give you a good idea of what it's "worth". There are people here who would bat an eyelash at spending $15k for a good 1st gen, but you have to find them.

I'd look to see if there are similar trucks posted for sale near you (private party, not dealers), and look to see how long they've been on the market. If they've been there a while, they're asking too much for current conditions.

Then, based on that, pick a number and post it up. If you get like 20 people the first day who aren't low-balling you, you're not asking enough. Start a bidding war, top bid gets it. If you don't get any interest, you're either asking too much or aren't reaching enough people. Cast a wider net.

I'm aware of the dependencies of my area. I've had interest here and there recently about it. Some low ballers and some that said they would consider paying top dollar because there's not many available in our area and people buy them within a day or so when people park them near the highway.

I was thinking of starting @ $7500 originally and see what response I get locally.

Have any of you had luck with doing a "highest bidder" sale for a truck?

List it on Facebook market place or Craigslist. Show it at a local parking lot with 4-5 appointments and let them decide who wants it. $6-8,000 seems about right for these trucks. Unfortunately most people don't have $6-8K sitting around so it might take a week or two... If I was in the mood to buy another truck I would take a look at yours; for that $7500 offering.

Dealer's gonna be like 'most we'll give you is $3k'

Then they'll turn around and put it on the lot for $12,000 lol.

I think he could probably get around $8k for it out west. Dunno what the market is like over there though. The 4cyl + auto combo isn't ideal for most people looking for these trucks, from what I've seen. Most that want a 4 banger usually want a manual with it. Those that want autos want double cabs with room for family/friends. Generally speaking of course

Not for a truck, but for plenty of other things I've sold. Just be honest with the potential buyers and tell them that you have multiple offers, and what the current highest bid is. I usually try to give the first person priority, but if there are other people offering more money, I tell that person. Sometimes that 1st buyer backs out, other times they agree to the higher price.

Sometimes people might feel like you're jacking them around trying to get a higher price, but if you have multiple offers, it doesn't really matter - you're selling stuff, not making friends.

Usually the biggest factor in sell price is your timeline. People in a rush to sell are obviously gonna get less out of it.

If you’re not in a hurry then I’d start around $10,000. If nobody bites for a couple weeks then drop $500 and keep doing that till around 7 or 8 grand.

Unless it was going to someone I thought deserved it then I wouldn’t go less than $6,500. Otherwise I’d rather just keep it or sell to a family member.
