I plan to pay to have the oil in my Gen III Taco changed at 5000 miles. What range of prices should I expect to pay the dealer for this service? Just the oil and filter change, synthetic oil.

The trucks most likely came with synthetic 0w-20w oil. Toyota care will only change at 10,000 miles with synthetic.

BTW, I have never seen 0w-20w oil that is not synthetic so be prepared to pay more. I just changed mine at 5,000 miles and the oil & filter cost to me was about $38, so a dealer will be much higher.

Depending on how handy you are, you may wish to do this yourself. Despite all of the negative talk of it being messy, it is not, and very easy to do

Toyota Care is going to change my oil once a year because I'll have no where near the suggested miles for the oil change. I drive my truck to town which is 8 miles away 2 or 3 times a week.

I dunno, I think 10,000 miles is a lot for the truck's first oil change. I'd rather pay to have it done at 5,000 and then get the Toyota "freebie" at 10,000. Maybe I'll buy a Toyota filter insert and have one of the local oil change shops do it for me.

Just curious as I'm being lazy, how many quarts do these babies hold? Also, I have yet to look for it, but do we have a traditional screw on filter or is it one of the self contained filters under the hood on the top of the engine? I'm about to be at 1000 miles and want to do one.

V-6 is a cartridge insert filter on the front/bottom of the engine. Take the skid plates off to see it (at least for the off road model). It holds 6.2 quarts.

This too! I am even thinking about letting Walmart change it. At least I can stand at the window and watch the oil go in.

For the v6 which is synthetic I'd expect to pay 70 to 80$

I am changing mine myself at 3500 miles .. it's just a peace of mind thing for me as i dont want to run my brand new truck for 10k miles before an oil change. I will let dealer do the 10k & 20k oil/filter change but the rest i will do myself ... i only put about 1k miles a month on truck if that

Got a 5qt of 0W-20 Valvoline Synthetic and two single quarts, wix filter and canister removal tool for $63.xx at O' Reillys. Had I been thinking I would have just grabbed two 5qts as the single qts were $7 each. They had the 5qt Valvoline on sell for $27.95. Maybe pop in this week and get another 4 or 5 jugs.

Manual says you can use 5W-20, however next oil change should be 0W-20. My wife's Turbo Optima called for 5W-20 and I put 10W-20 in it for years. I honestly just always had 10W-20 for our other vehicle and forgot hers called for 5W-20. Never had any negative effects.

All the 16 Toyotas use 0w20 now to extend the oil change intervals, its a semi synthetic from toyota really.

If you use 5w20 dino oil make sure to stick to the original 5k/8k kms oil service. It can be argued that the valve train doesn't like the slightly thicker oil when its cold. Plus the service life of dino oil isn't nearly as long.

I don't plan on keeping this truck so I'll keep to the schedule, its 16,000kms for us in Canada. I'd be tempted to run 0w40 if I lived in a warmer country but we have "free" oil changes for life so I'll just use what I get.

I'm used to running a winter oil and a summer oil, now I get no input :(

The Toyo oil is synthetic and is better than Mobil 1 .. go see the "oil guy" for test results. I bought a case of the Toyota 0-20w synth. oil off Ebay for $45.

I'd buy my oil and filter. Go with Amsoil. Then they just charge labor, (which should literally be less than $10). Labor at my dealership since I bring my own oil and filter is $6
