Is there a physical solution to prevent thieves from drilling your gas tank? It happened to my neighbor.
If a skid plate were added to the bottom of the tank, would thieves just drill the side of the tank?

Probably, or go through both with a long drill bit,,,, stolen with the tool itself of course.
There’s only so much you can do, we’re in a time where lawlessness is not only accepted, but encouraged.

Yes, the skids only protect the bottom

Only way to prevent it is to move to a less sketchy area. No other way.

Or keep the minimum in your tank and when you go to use it just fill up only the amount you will use that day.

You'd be surprised, my work's backup truck had its gas tank drilled in a very upscale suburb of Sacramento one night at our office about 2 blocks from the police station.

unsure there's any way to prevent it.
long story semi short, parked on the street in front of my house 1 night...usually park in driveway.
noticed gas dripping from tank at lunch time next day...drove straight to mechanic & they put a screw & rubber washer in a pinhole...tiny pinhole.
leak stopped, but filling tank gas would dribble down side of frame...mystery...
fortunate to have an OEM replacement tank in 2 days. mechanic replaces tank & finds the rubber portion of the filler neck had been cut thru half way with a knife, hence the leaking while filling.
$900 tank... about 2k all said & done including new RCI tank skid...not an inexpensive fix.

Put in cameras around your house. This won't stop gas thieves but will give you a better sense of what is going on in your neighborhood. I use Wyze cameras. Here is a lady going through my neighborhood checking my daughter's Scion door. This is at 11pm with just lighting from my porch light. Camera is shooting through a double pane window. Yes the Scion was locked

Petty stuff goes on everywhere. You can't stop the people from drilling the tanks. That would likely be covered by comprehensive insurance.

Unfortunately the door handle checking goes on in my area too. Lock your doors. It's going to happen no matter where you live or work people are not like the residents of Mayberry any more fir sure. It's even worse where you have woke district attorneys and judges

You gotta be pretty desperate and lame to drill a gas tank for what, $20-100 in gas. Then what do they do with it? I’m pretty sure these people probably don’t have cars. Can you trade gas for drugs? People suck.

On a side note I think I’d prefer vehicle producers go back to not putting syphon prevention necks on cars/trucks, as I’d rather lose $70 bucks in gas than have to deal with getting a whole new gas tank after some junkie drills it.

You gave me an idea, slap on a diesel decal on the gas cap to trick people who steal gas
