Just had my annual, and my insurance pays for most of my exam, but they hardly cover anything anymore as far as lenses and frames go. I’m fairly easy on my frames (raybans) and sunglasses (Oakley’s) but the costs are sickening as insurance seems to cover less and less. Id be happy just ordering new lenses as my frames are fine.
I ask the Dr, and receive my prescription after the exam and I am wondering has anyone worked with any online/direct company’s successfully reducing the out of pocket costs while providing the current prescription to them?
    Happy Holidays!

I’ve been wearing the same set of Warby Parker glasses for 3+ years. They were fairly cheap and have held up well.

I have also bought Rx RayBans from glasses.com.

There is one thing you will need that your eye Dr. might not have given you- your pupillary distance (basically the distance between your eyes). I asked my eye Dr. for this measurement at an appointment. If you have paperwork from an older set of glasses, it may show it.

If you are looking for an “eye opening” read on the topic of eyewear, go read about the company Luxottica. They basically own all major eyewear brands, including possibly your insurance company, optometrist office, and glasses manufacturer.

    Aftermarket wheels...that's it.
I've bought several pairs of glasses from Zenni.com
    Warby Parker is good, also.
You'll need your PD (pupillary distance) measurement. The eye doc must give you your Rx but the law doesn't say they have to give you the PD measurement so they tend to NOT put that with your prescription. Some places will charge you for the measurement. Others will do it for free, depending on how charming/polite you are.

I've gotten a pair of Rx eyeglasses and recently Rx sunglasses from Eyeconic. Easy to use and they have virtual try on. I screenshot my Rx from Kaiser website and uploaded it. It was easy. Check em out.

I got a good deal on a pair of Oakley glasses a few years ago from coastal.com, which has since been consolidated into Clearly, which appears to be one of Luxoticca's many child companies.

I measured my pupillary distance myself with instructions on their website and didn't have a problem; I think there's a margin or range built into the glasses.

One of my friends recently recommended Zenni for a low cost/no insurance option, as she wears a few different styles from there which she cycles through.

Never through an online source. Seems like a hassle to resolve if they were to goof up.

I have an optometrist I like that is really good. Been going there for a couple of years. After I get the prescription I take it to my local Costco. Can't beat Costco's prices or customer service. If there's an issue they'll make it right.

I've ordered through framesdirect.com in 2018. As far as Pupillary Distance, I submitted a photo of myself holding a CD (instructions on their website).
If you just need replacement lenses, I've ordered progressive sunglass lenses through lensesrx.com. Sent them my sunglasses and they replace the lenses with new prescription.
No problems that I can recall with either service, though only did it once as my company provided vision insurance shortly afterwards.

I have never tried getting them online. Always pick them up from the doctor. Kinda afraid too.

have ordered 4 pairs total over the past 6 years through Glasses USA with no issues(used the CD comparison measurement for the first order and has been fine).
I have what many would consider odd prescriptions - astigmatisms in both eyes, near sighted in one eye, far sighted in the other, and most recently added bifocals to the mix
I prefer Oakleys both everyday wear and for sunglasses, and typically find the best out the door pricing through them(watch for lens/frame discounts) for the options i want

Does your healthcare have an advocate number? Call them or check out your benefits page. There should be a list of providers both online and brick/mortar that will be able to maximize your insurance dollar.

Warby Parker is where I recently got a pair of specs

They’ll send you a few pairs to try on too and have a super easy return/exchange policy

I've been getting my glasses from Zenni Optical online for years. Never have had an issue. The last time I bought glasses locally, they were $600 plus for one pair. That's for basic frames and progressive lenses. My last order from Zenni, a month ago, was a pair of glasses that came with magnetic stick on sunglasses and a pair of sunglasses. Both pair with progressive, high-index lenses, total $269.75
