I’m gonna turn 16 in and I’m looking to get a 2nd gen. Grown up with Toyotas and driven a whole bunch of em so I know that’s what I want but can’t decide if I want to buy a 4wd with a few more miles or a low mileage PreRunner. I know the locking diff in the PreRunner is a step above normal 2wd but don’t know how well it will do in the snow. I live in Colorado so it’s gonna see snow. I know 4wd is gonna be hands down the best for performance and piece of mind, but if the PreRunner with locking diff isn’t that far off I’d like to find one with really low miles. Looking at $10-12k. Driven a 4wd tundra and it does amazing in the snow but haven’t had much experience with the 2wd locking diff. Any input is super appreciated.

Kinda the consensus I’ve been getting lately lol. Kinda just been curious considering they’re a TON cheaper. But at the same time you pay for the piece of mind of having 4wd knowing you can go almost anywhere

Lockers are dangerous in snow. 4x4 is the way to go.

Why not a 1st gen 4x4. Just as if not more reliable than the 2nd gen.

If you're going to be seeing snow then 4x4 all the way. 4x4 and no rear locker will outperform a 2wd w/rear locker in the snow all day long. Or better yet, get a 4x4 w/rear locker (TRD OR).

With your budget you aren't going to find a 2nd gen with 4x4 (let alone a rear locker) unless it's got well over 200k miles and maybe a salvage title. With that budget, I'd be looking at 1st gen Tacomas. Nothing wrong with 1st gens but you should check the frame under any Tacoma you look at and make sure it's not rusted.

Agree with those above. 4x4 will be ideal since you see a considerable amount of snow where you live, but you may have to adjust your desires based on your budget. You'll have a tough time finding a decent 2nd gen 4x4 for $10-12k.

I live in Colorado as well. I wouldn't ever consider a 2wd. 4x4 is pretty much mandatory up here in my opinion

Ill never go back to anything that isn't awd or 4wd for winters. dunno how much snow Colorado gets but if its anything like up here I wouldn't even consider a 2wd truck.

After reading more on it I think I’m gonna try and find a 4x4 1st gen with lower miles. Definitely after looking at this thread and others and seeing how strong the opinions were I don’t really think the rear locker will help much compared to a 4x4 where I live. I’m able to find 2nd gen 4x2’s on CL with about 120k miles for right around $12k but the 4x4’s are easily $16+. Knowing Toyota i don’t think I could go wrong with a 1st gen

PreRunner with Eaton TrueTrac in the rear can get you through a lot

No way you will find a good 2nd gen for 12k. Not even a prerunner. You need to look at 1st gens with 150k + miles

I found my 2nd gen TRD OR 4x4 access cab w/195k miles for $9200 but it could be that in the Colorado market they are harder to come by. I do think I got lucky and found a good deal tho.
