is there such a thing as a "prerunner" 4x4....I would think that would be a contradiction in terms. I have seen this on a truck and was wondering if the guy just stuck it on there...thanks

No such thing. Either prerunner OR 4x4 can't have both.... Unless you do a 4x4 swap from a prerunner lol

Technically, every 4x4 IS a PreRunner, until you need to put a 4x4 into 4WD. Just tying to ruffle the 4x4 folks feathers. Most likely, guy got into an accident and shop replaced tailgate with a PreRunner one and the owner doesn't;t either know or care.

I've seen a Gen1 PreRunner with 'TRD Off Road' badging on the rear quarter panels. Did they use to make PreRunner TRD off road packages back in the day? Am I correct that all TRD OR are 4x4s for Gen2s? I know you can get PreRunners with a TRD Sport Package.

If you wanna get really technical anything that drives a off-road coarse before the main event trophy trucks is a prerunner

In our TW terms a prerunner is a 2wd with no 4x4 capabilities.

I would say it is a 2wd truck using the 4x4 suspension components. So they are the same height.

I would guess the tuck you saw had 4x4 mud flaps or a tailgate was swapped

All Tacoma Prerunners are born 2wd only. There are about half a dozen members I know of that have converted to 4x4 IFS or went SAS.

There are some Prerunners with a TRD package, with the Off Road version including the E-Locker. From which comes the joke that 4x4's with open diffs are 2wd , just like a locked Prerunner.

Does anyone know the real answer as to why Toyota even bothers building two different types of frames/ suspension. What I mean is a high and low riding version? Toyota seems to be the only company that does this, for an example all Nissan Frontiers are the same ride height regardless of pkg, trim, 2wd or 4WD.

Same idea with the Dakota and Colorado etc ... I believe Chevy offered a factory "lifted" model called the S10 ZR2 in the 90's, was pretty bad ass for a stock truck actually, had 31x10.5 BFG All Terrains as standard equipment etc...

Sorry to ramble on, I've just been curious why all Tacomas arnt just PreRunner type or 4x4's? It's not like it cost anymore to make a base PreRunner .vs a base. 5-lug model. Not knocking 5-lugs, just wondering why.

    Different strokes!
You can bet they don't do a damn thing if they don't think they can make more money doing it. I borrowed this from live. Who else but toyota can accommodate these customers.

Then again, it's not true is it? Looking at domestic full size trucks in the lots, they have multiple heights/capabilities too.

I think you might be mixing up Tacoma 1st Gens with Toyota pickups?
