I recently bought a 2002 Tacoma. It's badges say TRD SR5 4wd and V6, it is also the double cab model. How do i tell if it is a pre-runner or an s-runner? parts stores and sites keep asking that and i want to make sure im not buying the wrong parts

The S Runner is a 5 lug truck and was similar to the S10 extreme. On the 2nd gens they called them X Runners.

    If you're truck is a 4x4 it's neither a S or PreRunner. A PreRunner is a 2WD 6 lug truck that looks similar to the 4WD versions.

a prerunner is a 2wd truck that sits up high with the 4wd look suspension and ride height
a non-prerunner is the regular car height truck and slightly lighter suspension
a 4wd is a 4wd sits up high and has heavier off road suspension and ride height

TRD and SR5 are options or special equipt packages, SR5 is the nicer interior and im not aware of all the differences but the TRD is I believe the off road exterior upgrade package (suspension and equipt)

Neither, those are both 2wd, you say yours is 4wd.

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
S-Runner only came in extended cab, that alone rules that possibility out. They are pretty rare trucks as it is, you never really see them. If you have a 4WD, it's either TRD or SR5. If it's a TRD it will have a button for a locker to the lower left of the steering wheel. Hope this helps!

See its throwing me off because it has the TRD package with the diff lock button, suspension set up, 4WD, and 6 lug wheels. but it also has the SR5 badges. I've had the truck for less than a week so I'm really just trying to figure out what exactly i have.

as I already told you, SR5 just means it has the fancy non-basic interior, that's all the SR5 tag means.

TRD = the stuff on the outside of your truck
SR5 = the stuff on the inside of your truck

so any truck can have both SR5 and TRD equipt packages

go here and enter your vin number and you will see the exact list of parts for your truck http://www.toyodiy.com/parts/q.html

You have a TRD. The TRD is an SR5 with the diff lock and Bilstein shocks.

There are no differences in parts between the two really other than what I listed above.

Pretty much stock other than the bed cover
The S-Runner is a lowered version of the standard 2wd , 5 lug Tacoma with everything being body color including the badging on the tailgate ! 1200 per year from 2001 - 2004 in two colors , red and black. 3.4 V6 5 speed only to my knowledge ?

I own a red 2001 and love it

Sorry to high jack this old thread but I'm having the same issue as the OP. Recently bought an 03 Toyota Tacoma. It's a
    V6 3.4L 4 door Double cab 4wd 4 speed Auto. No e locker.

It has no badges. I'm assuming it's just a base V6 model because I don't think it's a pre runner. Any thoughts?

    4 run, 2 don't
    You have a 4x4

A Prerunner would be the same truck you've got, but without it being a 4x4

    Hate going to autozone.
“Is it a base, xrunner, or prerunner?”
    “Is 4x4 an option?”
    “Uhhhhhh”
