I’m not trying to ‘beat a dead horse’..... I’ve read the manual and searched this forum. However, I would like to get some clarification about the Pre-Collision system.

It seems like it only functions while in Cruise Control..... it works and does what it was intended to do. However, if Cruise Control isn’t on.... Pre-Collision system doesn’t do anything. The same goes for pedestrian detection warnings. Is there something wrong with my system? I’ve had several close calls.... yet, there were no warnings or system controlled braking.

    Thank you....

Its better at slowing with CC on since it's using the distance presets with CC. It will still apply brakes with CC off, Im not sure if it will fully stop or if its actually enough to prevent a crash since I havent had one, lol. I did once have it hit the brakes at about 50% of the stopping power.

I've also noticed I believe it prioritizes the driver input, so if it wants to brake or starts braking and you hit the gas it will accelerate.

Hmmm, maybe I was in cruise then, let me go try it out on the highway lol.

OP maybe dont take my word for it then, I could have sworn it did it without being in cruise once, but I don't want anyone taking that to the bank, or hospital.

2 separate tasks performed by the same device. When cruise control is on, it acts as an adaptive distance controller, keeping you a preset distance from the car in front of you.

When cruise control is not on and the car detects a rapidly approaching obstacle, and zero braking force, it alerts you. Note that any slight amount of braking is enough to bypass the warning.

Not true. Braking force will not bypass the warning. Was driving down the street, traffic started to slow down, I started to hit the brakes and was gently slowing down with the car in front of me, keeping it about 200 feet in front of me. The car suddenly slammed on the brakes when another car cut it off, and my brake warning lights came on beeping and screaming at me.

I already saw it happening and was already reacting to the situation, pushing brake pedal harder, but the safety sense was still active and on top of it.

if it works like our Subaru does, the reason is you are beating the truck to the "action" that is needed at that instant, plus you are a good driver! The system will probably save your but -- if you have a slight lapse in attention someday!

Do your trucks get confused by exhaust vapors in cold weather? My Subaru has freaked out on me twice (back when the weather was still cold). I started to go after being stuck at a light. I guess it thought the exhaust "smoke" from the car in front of me was a stopped vehicle and it slammed on my brakes. It scared the shit out of me and I am glad the person behind me had their head on a swivel.

Yup, I will not buy another car without pre collision warning/automated braking/blindside alert etc.....Can't put a price on safety no matter how good of a driver you *think* you're.

Toyota’s Pre-Collision System uses an in-vehicle camera and laser to keep an eye on the vehicles directly in front of you. If the system determines that a frontal collision may be possible and the possibility is high, the driver will receive audio and visual cues. These cues are designed to alert the driver that they need to brake to avoid a collision. The Pre-Collision System may also help the driver apply more force to the brakes with Brake Assist. If the driver continues driving without braking and the system determines the threat of a collision becomes extremely high, the system may automatically apply the brakes for the driver in hopes of either avoiding the collision altogether or mitigating the effects of the collision.

I had a weird one happen this week. On the highway, 55mph. The vehicle in front of me turned into a right turn lane, so there was no reason for me to slow down. But the PCS system decided to brake very hard. And I had a vehicle behind me that almost rear ended me at 55mph. They probably shouldn't have been on my tail so close, but I'm sure they saw the truck in front of me in the turn lane so they weren't anticipating me braking.

I don't remember if the automatic braking turned off quickly or what. It all happened so fast. But had I not immediately mashed on the gas pedal to RAPIDLY speed up, I woulda been toast.

It was definitely a scare. Something happened there that shouldn't have happened. Maybe I was following too close. But I saw the blinker ahead, saw the turning lane, I knew what was transpiring. My truck then did something that could have easily resulted in me getting rear ended. Just something to be aware of, I guess.

Same here. Think I just stepped on the gas to stop it.

He/she probably swerved out too much to the left and the cameras (Subaru) or the camera + Radar (Toyota) spotted the turning vehicle in your path at that instant. The Subaru system relies on 2 stereoscopic cameras, while Toyota uses a single camera mated with the "radar" up front of the car/truck.
I am not sure this is a improvement in either use. I am sure Toyota had plenty of research on both systems as they (Toyota) owns 16-18 % of Subaru!
It would be interesting to see a head to head comparison of the 2 approaches to this feature.

This is mostly correct, but it is a millimetre-wave steerable beam radar and a camera. No frickin' lasers on Tacos, although that would be cool for sure.

I hope to God the system will increase brake force if it thinks the driver is not applying enough. I have not had the balls to test that, could turn out to be very expensive.

which is really funny because I think these systems are supposed to ignore the accelerator in situations like that--because people smash the gas when they mean to hit the brake.

Yeah I don't even know what happened in my example above-- I think my foot went to gas-brake-gas-brake-gas all in a split second. Because my mind was thinking "WTF this trucks is not responding as it should!" My best guess is I hit the gas, it didn't respond, so I braked to try to "shut off" the automatic stuff, then mashed the gas so I didn't get hit from behind.

If you drive down a country road with tree/bush branches close to the road, pre-collision gets confused real quick. Good test of the system, lol.

Can you shut it off? Going to work the other day I had a yellow light on the dash indicating PCW was off. However, on the center info center it said it was on. It’s the 2nd time it’s happened. I dicked around trying to see if I made it do that or it shut itself off. Any ideas?
