    Hi everyone,

I did a search and couldn't find too much regarding the price on what people have paid for this. My power steering pump and reservoir are leaking according to the dealership. I noticed it was leaking after having the same dealer replace the valve timing cover. The leak is fast enough that I would have hoped the dealer would have seen it when the entire front end was off for the valve cover.

They are quoting me $1068.04 to replace the pump, reservoir, and flush the system. This seems really high to me and I'm going to get a 2nd opinion but was curious what others have paid.

    Quote from dealer for pump:
    Part: Price:
    Pump Assy, Vane $436.99
    Power Steering Fluid $3.83
    Hose, Oil Reservoir $59.99
    Gasket, Pressure Por $5.99
    Labor $376.69
    Misc $31.80
    Tax $43.16
    Quote for flush:
    Part:
    P/S Flush $38.48
    Labor $61.47
    Misc $6.36
    Tax $3.28

Go to another mechanic shop. That seams high. It might not all be bad. I don't use the Toyota shop for anything that I have to pay for. They fixed me of that when they quoted me 975$ to change a front wheel bearing.

Did it just start leaking after they did valve cover?

X2. Take it to a private shop for a second opinion. Ask around to your buddies to see who has used a good shop in your area with good results. I'll trust a good family-owned mechanic's shop any day of the week, and will never, ever pay a dealership to do anything. Bad experiences.

Let us know what ends up happening!

Yes. I had the valve timing done back in July at 87000 miles and I'm at 89000 miles right now and the reservoir leaks significantly now. There isn't much I can do but take it somewhere else as I don't have the space to do the work myself.

I priced the parts and I'm seeing they have a huge markup on parts. Pump online is about ~$300 and they are quoting me $437 so I'll be checking other places out. They also quoted me shocks and assembly arms that were about 50% higher than average online prices.

Should know more tomorrow, thanks for the replies!

First I would confirm what is actually leaking. Highly unlikely that the power steering pump and reservoir are both leaking. Clean it all up using simple green or a good cleaner of your choice. Then monitor for leaks to see exactly where it is coming from. It may be as simple as a hose replacement.

I have been driving Toyota since I was 19 ( I'm now almost 61 ) and I have never replaced a power steering pump on one. More than likely just a hose or the reservoir. I would not take their word for it.

The pump in my 2002 F250 went out two years ago. I paid just shy of $500 for the entire replacement by Firestone. Why in the hell would I need to flush a brand new pump? I just had then drain it and refill it despite their woes that the old fluid could destroy the new Pump. Well I'm still waiting for that to happen.

What the hell are you doing getting a quote from a dealership out of warranty?

Realistically it could. Ther could be bits of matter from the defective pump in the system and they in turn could damage the new pump.

The price is way out of line. The pump and high pressure line are only $250, tops. It's an easy job to do yourself. Doubtful if your reservoir is bad, and if it is leaking then replacing the pressure line and cap should do the trick. I'd do it myself if it were me. As far as flushing, you will do that as part of the work. You drain the system putting in a new line and pump. You then refill the reservoir with clean fluid, and run the engine while you cycle the steering side to side to get all the air out of it. you should run the old fluid (whatever is left) into a drain pan and keep the reservoir full while cycling to remove air. Once you are done you can hook up the return line, top it off and call it a day, cause you have flushed your system by cycling new fluid through it in removing the air. Good luck

If I had the time I would do it myself, I'm not worried about the work it's more the time. Took the truck to an independent shop and they found the same thing but are able to do it for about $700 (pump and hose are about $330 online average). I had the dealer quote me fixing a clunk in the front suspension at the same time as the pump and they quoted me $3500. That was for new uppers, lowers, and struts. Turns out it's only a ball joint so it looks like I'll be out of there with everything at about $1300.
