While replacing a frame on my taco I got a quote for other stuff while they had it all apart

"Power steering rack, lower shaft & power steering lines, rotted $2297"

That's a lot of $$$$. Any experience with that? Any advice is appreciated

I had them do the high pressure hose while they were in there all it cost me was for the part at like 400 some odd bucks. Easier to do while they had it apart. Just make sure they aren't charging you any labor since all that shit had to come off to begin with. The yota racks are expensive something like 1g just for the part you can get cheaper reman units they are a PITA to replace with the truck put together. The steering shaft isn't that expensive and relatively easy to do when the truck is put together if you can do that stuff yourself. @EatSleepTacos found the shaft for a decent price and did it on his. I really need to do mine as well.

TBH, all 3 of those are places I'd rather not go aftermarket on my own vehicle (and I sell aftermarket parts....) although especially on the rack, I dunno if that desire would win out over the massive price difference. Probably not, considering I've never bought a power steering rack or pump from a dealer for any of my own vehicles.

I had the pressure line on my 1st gen re-hosed by a local hydraulic place (I screwed up and didn't reinstall a clamp, and the hose rubbed through) for like $100, but that's no good if the issue is a rusty fitting or chunk of hard line, which I suspect is the case if you're getting a frame replacement. But if that pressure hose really is $400, I'd be hard pressed to spend that when I could get one for 1/4-1/2 as much.

Were they quoting labor on them? I'd take issue if they are, the rack has to be swapped either way, the lower shaft has to come halfway off (and when it is, could be all the way out in a minute) and the pressure hose is at least a LOT easier with the body off the frame, although it's not as cut and dry as the rack & shaft.

My dealer did my high pressure hose free labor. Not sure if the aftermarket even makes one but it's one octopus looking thing and didn't even want to deal with doing it when all it cost me was parts.

Know several guys who have done aftermarket racks and ps pumps same issues they have with the factory ones just costs a lot less or free replacement under warranty which you won't really get from the factory replacement.

I put an A1 Cardone rack in mine, also replaced the pressure and return lines as well as the bushings in the new rack with Energy Suspension. I did not replace the intermediate shaft as mine was still good with no binding or play.

I just looked back, I paid about $600 out the door for all the above from RockAuto, then got a bit back for core charge on the rack. I’ve put 12k miles on the truck since February with zero issues.

That's high. OEM rack is like 900. Shaft is less than 100. Labor, well.... idk.

Had the same done ,going off memory it was $300 something for an aftermarket rack ,$100 something for shaft and PS lines are around $150 . I could dig out my invoice if you want exact numbers. No labor charged because they are replacing frame at the time .

Yeah, my rack was aftermarket, I believe it was 350 if I recall. Without the tie rods which I bought separately.
