Hey y'all. I'm planning to do a power steering drain and fill soon on my '21 Tacoma SR (V6 4WD). Turkey baster method. Anyway, the manual says to use Automatic Transmission Fluid DEXRON II or III. OEM Toyota ATF Dexron II/III fluid is pricy, and I'm sure it's not liquid gold. So, do y'all have any suggestions out there?

Here is what I am currently looking at: https://www.walmart.com/ip/Valvolin...TF-1-GA/15125788?wl13=1412&selectedSellerId=0

    Thanks everyone.

That will work just fine, I've typically used the cheapo auto store brand stuff.

Ok great, thanks. Is it ok to be using something that isn't specifically marketed towards "import vehicles"? Also, on a side note, can one use higher Dexron (i.e., IV, V, VI) in our Tacomas even though the manual specifies Dexron II/III?

Ha, I need that question answered too! Can't find Dexron II/III anywhere...only Dexron VI

I have tried the red O’Reillys brand Dex VI, and it says it’s compatible with Dex II & III as well as Toyota WS ATF…
Pretty sure the seals are not liking it in my 2012 Tacoma or my 1997 4Runner… as they both started leaking aggressively once flushed with the Dex VI.

im trying to flush back to OEM Toyota & see if I can get away with that.

I use Amsoil Universal ATF as its rated for Dex. Plus its what I had lying around. Every other oil change I extract the reservoir dry and refill with fresh.

You can use dex iv if the spec is not to be found. Ideally though some valvoline max life or something would be more ideal. From my experience the only issue i've found with the dex iv is that the steering is slightly stiffer due to the thinner fluid. If you live in a cold climate though, the dex iv is probably for the better

Thanks for the feedback everyone.

About to get into my 1st ever round of truck maintenance to save $$$ by doin the basic fluid flushings myself... Diffs, brakes, and Power Steering looks easy enough. (30k mile mark)

Masta, what's your plan for the brakes? I know the manual says to top off/check if dirty, but is there a procedure for something like a drain and fill you could point me towards?

For years I have used a vacuum bleeder. Start with the rear then do the fronts, don't touch the brake pedal. Easier if you have a helper to keep the master cylinder topped up.

**Disclaimer: While this has worked fine on many older vehicles I haven't used it on the Tacoma yet - I'll browse the service manual first just to see if there are any cautions noted.

This is essentially what I’ve done many times. It should be done around every 2 years or so.
It doesn’t bleed the ABS pump but it gets most of the fluid. I’ve done it with a helper pumping the pedal and a bleeder - either way works.
    Back passenger 1st
    Back driver 2nd
    Front passenger 3rd
    Front driver 4th.
Bleed each corner until it’s clean fluid.

Going to attempt to do what those last two said,...I got the tools, and there's enough youtube Yota mechanic videos out there that I think I've got enough know-how to get it done. :fingerscrossed:
