I posted this a few days ago in the 2nd Gen "What have you done ..." thread and got quite a few questions, comments, and PMs for more details.

In the interest of full disclosure: 1) I completely stole this design from ENO's Roadie hammock stand. I truly appreciate the compliment, but I have no interest in making these to sell. ENO makes what looks like a great product so buy theirs. 2) I did this as a practice project so that I could learn to use my MIG welder and tube bender. That being said, be gentle on the comments regarding my welds - I'm fragile!

Here's the stand itself. The scrap piece of angle is to reinforce the upright. I burned through the point where the tube was notched. As I said, I'm practicing.

The link of chain is for attaching a ratchet strap. The top of the pole has another link. Between the two, I used ratchet strap to add tension and distribute the weight.

    The Measurements*

The base is made out of 1.5" .095 seamed tube. I put a 180 degree bend in a 33" piece of tube and notched and welded the 10.5" long holder at about 120 degrees. The poles are 1.25" .095 seamed tube cut to 5'.

*All measurements are approximate. I used the scrap I had laying around and my limited patience for measuring, numbers, and arithmetic.

    LAB Testing

I performed the highly scientific Lay in it And Bounce (LAB) test - a standard in the portable hammock stand industry - and it flexed surprisingly little. I then tried the LAB test with the Open Beer Resting on my Tummy (OBRT) addition and didn't spill a drop.

    Enjoy!

I think you did a terrific job. I also use a hammock I got from Dutch, and this is a great idea.

Never even occurred to me that something like this existed. Brilliant copy of a cool design, sir! Gonna have to remember this!
