    Is this a thing?

I have the style above. I keep it in a bucket because it leaks a mess. Just ran out of Red n Tacky #2.

Had to take a road trip, and the truck is squeaking. Probably wise to start with greasing up the zerk fittings in the UCA's and LCA's/LBJ's.

Is there a cheap clean portable solution, to potentially keep in the truck?
I know if I go and blow $30 on the same thing pictured above, it will just end up leaking grease out everywhere as it sits...

Nice and small! For what your looking for, I say this b/c I think they all leak some what, and this one is a very small hand held.

Every grease gun I’ve ever used leaked. I think partially because the plunger that pushes the grease up from the bottom doesn’t seal in the tube well. Also if it takes you 5 years to use up one tube, liquid oil will separate from the thick paste.

If you keep it in your truck, it’ll make a mess.

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B079TD12Z3?ie=UTF8&th=1

I bought this thing for the coupler cover. I never used the condom thing that goes on the tube bottom. Still, even if you were to use it, and wipe the entire grease gun clean, you could still end up with stains on your interior.

Isn't there a better place than in the truck for some thing you use every so often? Mine don't leak even in hot weather.

in the sense of big regular ones would unnecessarily take up too much space, no

there's already enough space taken up by recovery equipment behind the seats

Everything is portable including the house you live in. Just like every problem a vehicle faces is repairable, although often not wise to do so.

    https://www.amazon.com/Prolube-GP2-...55+gallon+drum+grease+gun,aps,181&sr=8-4&th=1

One could put this in the bed next to a gasoline powered air compressor and call it portable. Possible yes, wise no. o_O

Instead of storing behind the seats why not find one that will fit in the bed cubby? Then who gives a shit if it leaks. Wipe the cubby out when you feel necessary.

I wrapped mine in an old towel and put it in a decent plastic bag (not the thin BS ones the grocery store gives you). I only carry it if I doing a road trip that involves a trailer and even then it goes in a bucket in the bed of the truck with some other tools if possible.

100% fact! thrown away more tubes of grease from not using them. my sister came over once and was going to throw some into her car the nastiest blue green, slime water poured from every part of that gun. I now drop the tubes after use and scrape them into a can.

This reminds me that I need to clean out my grease gun - -

I keep the grease gun and my chainsaw on pieces of old cardboard in the garage - so when they leak, the cardboard can absorb the gunk/go in the trash when it gets bad enough; seems to keep the mess contained and is easy enough to clean up

Was thinking about that. The big cubby on the driver side. I can always wrap it in something like a PigMat. Maybe big ZipLoc but the grease could eat through it. Either way, a little bit of grease dripping down the frame will probably just act as rust-protectant, and likely not get on the tires to make them slippery because the drip/leak rate would be slow, and cubby is behind the tire not over it

I forget the proper terminology for it, but was explained to before that things like grease have a liquid soap emulsifying agent (or whatever it's called)
    essentially being two parts
Part 1: more of a solid type of lubricant, thick
    Part 2: liquidy thin part

that when new, is mixed together to achieve desired consistency of the grease

However, when sitting in a grease gun (that's not 100% sealed); the liquidy thin part tends to separate and leak out, leaving unusable chunks of solid/too thick grease left inside

I think that doesn't happen when grease is sold in tubs (instead of tube) but I don't see how to use tub grease into a zerk fitting.
Last time I ever was able to use tub grease, was packing a rebuildable wheel bearing in a car
where you pretty much dunk the bearing into the tub and switch it around to fill with grease (as well as work the bearing by hand, or push it in via plastic bag)

given the Taco gets greased less often than a construction mechanic servicing equipment all day,
kinda sucks to buy and load up a tube for it to just end up leaking out...

There's actually a company that makes silicone caps (which I have) that slide over the grease gun tip, and onto the bottom rod
    to "seal it"
but in practice it doesn't actually work...

with the mess it makes at that point I guess I'd need to start keeping gloves, wipes, and PigMats in the truck to go along with it...

There is a grease gun that plugs back into itself. It's called Lock n Lube.

I didn't know those were a thing. Maybe stuff a little piece of pig mat in the cover that goes on the big end? It seems that's where most of the liquid comes from anyway. Gonna go look for those caps online now. LOL!
