Port vs direct injection on Tacomas.

    I where In this entire article does it mention anything about “self cleaning fuel injectors” or engine going into “cleaning mode” hmm….

    Thanks everyone. Great information and I got some reading to do. Would have checked in sooner but I'm on 24 hour shifts and finally got home.

    i don't think they are referring to self cleaning Injectors. BUT the port injection assists in cleaning the Intake valves and stopping carbon build up seen with strictly direct injected engines. One of the reasons Toyota put the port injection in these engines was for the "cleaning " properties of the port injection system.

    I hadn't read the entire thread before I posted the plot for the Tacoma before, but since there was some interesting discussion around 2GR-FKS variants, I thought I'd also post the (even less detailed) plot from the other Toyota/Lexus 2GR-FKS and the similar 7GR-FKS, which does show that at low speed/loads it can be either port or direct before switching to port and direct, and then finally direct only.

    Whether the Tacoma actually does that or not is probably up for debate, since the plot included in that document is more similar to the earlier 2GR-FSE plot.

    Good info. I wish we could know when it actually switches. For example, let’s say I’m towing. I’m regeared which puts 5th gear @ 3200 rpm for 65 mph. That’s where I like to tow. That’s slightly past halfway up the rev range and that’s a decent load since I’m towing. Is it running the entire trip on the highway (4 hours recently) in DI only? Would be interesting to know more detail about what it chooses and when.

    I'm sure one of the tuners like OV could probably provide some of that mapping, or you could log a few pulls at different ambient/engine temperatures and loads with TechStream and analyze the output. It's likely a complex surface though, especially if temperatures are not well controlled.

    Yeah, I’ve got TS and VF and suppose I could log it someday. I only towed like that once ever (recently), but was just curious what it may have been doing for those 500 miles. I would imagine that it would still run the port injectors now and then to do the cleaning they’re designed to do, but who knows.

    Tacoma variant does run Port only at low loads/rpms.

    I think the data list is misleading, it cant and doesnt run on port only.

    It does. Look at both injectors spray timing
