    Hey guys,
I tried searching for this, but didnt really find anything about my specific questions.

I understand they are both plug and play. Looks like OEM runs up passenger side to tie in, while PnL uses driver side.
I assume it would use my existing fob? No need for a 2nd just for the tailgate correct? Since its tied into the rest of the trucks locking wiring.
Would it lock/unlock the tailgate with the keyless entry as well?
Basically does it mirror all settings that I have for the door locks?

The reason I ask is because I saw some stating that they can set it to only unlock tailgate with 2 presses (such as if the settings were 1 for drivers door, 2 for remaining doors). Then I saw that it locks/unlocks everytime no matter what. So Im getting confused.

It could be that the functionality of the OEM and Pop are different. Or is it the settings?

Can anyone who has these confirm?

One fob for all. My pick is OEM. Comes with everything you need. Some people say the lock/unlock mechanism is louder on the P&L… that might be a consideration for some. I never had a P&L so can’t confirm this.
I installed the OEM and thought is was well worth the $120 I paid for it.

It all depends on which door it taps into.

    Driver's- unlocks with driver's door

Any other door- unlocks with passenger door

Both models tap into the existing lock signal, therefore neither use a separate fob. They both act as integrated

As rock lobster said….all I will add is that you can program the truck locking to be all 4 doors unlock at once, or drivers unlocks first and the other 3 do on the second click of the remote button. So, at passenger side plug in, you can choose based on how you set the truck up, driver side you can only unlock with one click.

Personally I have the OEM lock, plugged into passenger side, and the truck set to unlock all 4 on one click. I don’t like the 2 stage unlock.

    And the programming preference also;
1st press Driver's unlock//2nd press all other doors unlock(n tailgate)
    or
One press, all unlock n tailgate.
    or
with a custom harness, have front doors unlock with 1st press// 2nd press all remaining doors (n tailgate)

    Ok, I get it now.
I have the "stage 1" setting now (unlock all 1st press), but I think Id want the "stage 2" if I had the tailgate tapped in. I dont know why exactly. Just feel like I wouldnt want/need to unlock the tailgate every single time I get in the truck. That opinion could change once I have it installed. But at least I know now that if I install into the passenger side, I have the option of changing the setting later to whatever I prefer.

So what about the keyless entry? Will the tailgate unlock/lock by just touching the door handle? (Assuming I have it set to "stage 1" unlock all setting)
This is the first vehicle Ive owned that has keyless entry. Always thought it was an unnecessary option, but MAN, I LOVE it now....LOL. Getting spoiled in my old age. :D

It is very simple. The tailgate lock is wired into the passenger door circuit. If the door unlocks, so does the tailgate. If your door handle unlocks all of them when you use it, then the tailgate will unlock. If it doesn’t, it won’t.

when I installed my tailgate lock I was still using the default 2 stage unlocking. It annoyed me, so I changed the vehicle settings to 1 stage. I’m not worried about wearing out the tailgate lock, if the driver door can handle all the locking and unlocking we do, then so can the other 3 doors and tailgate IMO. To me anyways, it’s just nice to press the button, hear the beep and see the blinker and know that everything is open.

OEM is better quality and not a loud as the Pop n Lock. OEM one has wire looms, the wires are perfect in length and just a better well thought out kit. I went back and put some sound insulation inside the tailgate handle area, it made a big difference.

I have both, p&l in my daughters 16 oem in my 20. The oem is near silent compared to rhe p&l waking up the neighbors. Go with the oem it's quiet & it's much easier running wires up the pasenger side as the fuel tank blocks the left & it's a pita.

parts.toyota. Wildest site ever. Some dealers ship free for any order over $75, other dealers have a "sale" that is well below MSRP, some have both.

When I bought wheels it took me about two hours of price comparing across various random dealerships. I just keyed in a random zip code and searched. Saved me about $500 off of MSRP and who-knows-what in shipping costs though.

    Another option is this one:
    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B09Q6F276P

It is aftermarket, but is otherwise similar to the Toyota version. Had it for a few months now and price is much more appropriate, IMHO.

I’ve had a P&L for about six years. Easy enough to install, loud but not annoyingly so, no real issues though I have cleaned and lubed the mechanism a few times. One caution which I suppose applies to the OEM (which was not available back in ‘16) also. There’s no capability to detect if the key is in the bed. So if you have a shell or tonneau, and the vehicle gets locked with the remote, perhaps accidentally when it’s in your pocket and gets pressed up against something, and you then close up the shell or tonneau with the remote in the bed, it’s locked in. DAMHIK.

That's interesting... I haven't seen that one before. The picture of the included parts looks very similar to the OEM kit. But the reviews... not so good. Is the Amazon seller related to KTJO_4x4 ???

I have a P&L. Uses the OEM keyfob (harness plugs right into the OEM harness in the driver's kick panel/sill) Plug and play with no issues, but I think you have already ordered the OEM one. Install took 45minutes to an hour.

When I bought, the only negative was that the press fastener was not small enough. I thought that might have been fixed when I got it, but it was slightly too large to engage the plastic nub. Simply hammering it flat gave the correct fit.

Overall, it seems to be high quality and has functioned as intended, unlike KTJO 4x4 :puke: stuff.

It was said that the design is different than the KTJO 4x4 :puke:one. For me, $100 or less seems to be the right price for this mod. It came with the two double hole grommets and attaches to the plastic nub, which were a big deals to be for longevity and such.

Wow... I guess the OEM kit went up. I bought mine in March 2020, and it was $136 including shipping. Seems that I saw someone post about a $130 price recently.
