You said the dealer is replacing the valves ..but they didn’t give you a explanation to why ?? Sounds like the dealer is just guessing that was the issue .Sucks that you had something go wrong at that milage .who knows how you drove the truck and if it was abused or you just had a part fail due to manufacturer part that was defective.for all you know they fixed the issue and the truck would of ran till 300k miles after repair . People need to stop thinking that your going to own these trucks and your never going to have stuff break. It’s a mechanical machine and stuff is going to happen .But overall these trucks are pretty dam reliable .

There are a few reports on here about this code, including my own. Not as prevalent as the complaints about noises, but the dealer always seems to have a couple of Tacomas in the shop for this issue. In my case, head and number 1 valves were replaced at 47,000 miles.

I had a 2011 with zero issues. Now having a 2018 with a head and valves replaced, rear axles replaced, and soon a fuel pump replaced is not impressive for a 2 year old vehicle.

Not denying that the 3.5L design is fine in a minivan or similar vehicle, where they are mostly on the road in controlled conditions.

Place that same engine in an off-road capable vehicle like the Tacoma, with a weak transmission, and its design defects really show:

I would love to know if any Toyo techs on here know if there is a VIN range affected, or is it just sporadic failures? I see other posts with other year models so it may be just random.

Always cylinder #1 for some reason. Maybe its last in line for coolant or oil?

Also, can't wait until there's a fourth gen so we can all clog their forum with nonsense and tell them how our old shitboxes are better than their new trucks cause we said so.

My previous vehicle was an 06 4Runner sport Ed (made in Japan) with a 4.0L . I bought it with 10k on the clock and maintained it in accordance with the service manual. The reason I bought my new Taco was because it was in the early stages of head gasket failure and that is a $$ job, beyond what I would want to tackle in my garage. The point is, there are occasional issues with any vehicle. Toyota is typically better than most. I'll never buy another Honda due to a CRV my wife had that the AC system imploded on (known issue) and Honda didn't make it right, so they are off the list for any future purchases. Not all Hondas are bad, but they pissed me off by not taking care of the problem. So if my Taco had this or any other major issue, (because its mechanical) I wouldn't be all butt hurt about it if Toyota took care of it. However, if they told me to pound sand I'd be pissed off and likely not have two Toyota's with 3.5L engines in my driveway. All manufacturers have issues in some vehicles, Toyota is no different, but if they take care of the problem that's about as much as one can hope for.

so, the first vehicle with our engine was a GS 350, then the Tacoma, then a minivan. why do so many people say we have a minivan engine?

You have to cut the 2nd gen guys some slack. We don't know how many of them are still having to burn CDs to listen to their favorite tunes or dreading winter because they're going to lose the use of their side mirrors to frost and ice.:boink::crapstorm:

As someone who off-roads their 3rd gen daily, I’ve never had this issue, I’ve had the low oil pressure warning come on but only if I sit like that on the incline for an extended period of time. Thousand of third gen owners have tackled the hardest trails in North America. I can pull up videos of 2nd gen failing off-road as well. The 05 -06 models are notorious for head gasket issues upwards of 150k. The taco is still one of the best off-roaders you can buy, although now it faces more competition with the gladiator and bronco. That being said 120,000 miles of ownership, 5 years, thousands of miles off-road. Own one for that long and then you can talk.

As someone who owns Toyotas with the 4.0, the 3.5 and the 4.5, let me objectively state that none of their 6 cylinders have any balls. Not a one.

I find the ongoing assertion of other 4.0 owners that it is a "proper truck" engine laughable and pathetic. Seriously, get out more and stop trolling the WRX to Tacoma converts in the 3rd gen subform.

Your adoration of a truly mediocre engine....in all measurable aspects.... is just sad.

Bullshit. You are repeating an unsubstantiated failure analysis, all you know for sure is your truck has an issue, it displayed a code, your dealer claims to know what is wrong by reading a code (pure bullshit, a code doesn't diagnose the problem it offers a clue) and you have a moron friend that spins wrenches, If your valves are damaged there is an underlying reason, replacing them without determining why they failed is beyond ignorant. If what you claim about multiple valve failures at the same dealership...the common denominator is the dealer. Not a good indicator that they would be the first choice for providing a solution

I got my truck back today. New head and 4 new valves. They reused the other valves that were still good. Cylinder one had 130 psi due to burnt valve. Possible cause is bed valve guides. Head will be sent back to Toyota. I spoke directly to the mechanic who fixed my truck. He said he has personally fixed five of these this year. One was on a highlander. Said most were 2018 models. He wishes Toyota would let him replace other side while the truck is torn apart but they will not.

Dealer was nice, rotated tires, obviously replaced all fluid since engine was torn apart. Also they put a new battery in the truck, maybe they dropped the old one?

I got to see the truck mid repair and it was sad. Engine removed, all tires removed, front clip removed, most exhaust removed, glove box was removed. It was crazy the work they did.

I hope it treats its next owner good. At least they will get a new battery. Trading it in tomorrow.

And talking to the service department about problems is like going to the doctor and have them say that nearly everyone they see is sick. Well....that's were sick people go.

For your encore I'm sure you'll tell me that the 4cyl is a "tractor motor" compared to the 6cyl or something.
