I got the Platinum 10 years/125K, paid few hundred less than $2600. I recovered the money with the repair of the coolant by pass that broke at 70K. Sold the truck and transferred the warranty to new owner.

What year and model was that? That part is like $50 and a couple hours work DIY. If I'm looking correctly, but that doesn't seem like $2600 worth.

You mean the OEM warranty Toyota won't honor when your trucks electronics crash? My transmission will last 100k that touch screen won't. But when it does go out its safe to assume the guy behind the desk is going to blame me for it.

This is not true, the electronics are covered under the Toyota VSA extended warranty (unless there is evidence of abuse by the customer, and that burden of proof is on Toyota).

Yea, $1500 for labor on a $50 part. My point exactly. Removing the intake manifold is easy. I'm in the wrong business...

Still, that $2600 for this. It just doesn't add up, and that is typical for extended warranties. Even factoring in the cost of a rental for a couple days, which, again, the task could have been done in a single day at home. I know, I know... Not everyone is a mechanic... But the cost of it turned me into one.

So... Internal investigation... Yea, those are always reliable...

Just bought a brand new tacoma a few weeks ago. Dealership supplemented a 100k/7yr bumper to bumper on top of the standard 36k/3yr 60k/5yr warranty. Even covers the clutch (its a manual, apparently the new type clutches are lifetime so its not a wear product).

Said the warranty is 100% through toyota, and is done at toyota dealerships anywhere in the country. It was $1600. Is this the platinum warranty? Not sure how to check status or anything. This is my first new vehicle.

I priced 8 years/100K. Keep in mind that the 8 years starts when the truck was new. So I have 5-1/2 years left and/or 75,000 miles left whichever comes first. I paid over $1000, but under $1100. Jen or Troy is the way to go. For roughly $200 bucks a year I was willing to gamble. If I never have to use it, I'll be just fine

    $0 deduct. Toyota Platinum VSA

That’s far from the norm. On here you read about the exceptions when someone was denied coverage, and even then we don’t get the full story because people don’t expose their own faults online to be torn apart. They just bitch about how Toyota didn’t help them and the mob bands together and all says, “Yeah, fuck Toyota those bastards!”. What you don’t hear about is all of the times that people have an issue and Toyota simply fixes it under warranty, and they don’t come on here to talk about it becasue it’s over with and they move on with their lives. People rarely go online and type about positive experiences anywhere near as often as people bitch about bad ones. Like when you google a medical problem and all you see is people saying theirs was cancer, when there are 1000 people that just had a stupid rash for a couple days. But you never hear about all of them because it was insignificant and not worth taking the time online to tell everyone about it.

I totally agree with you here. But it doesn't have much to do with the value of these extended warranties. Fact is most people never use them and majority who do end up paying more for labor mark ups than the warranty is worth. I would say if you can get that peace of mind for around $1k then that seems reasonable. But $2600 for a $50 part and $1600 labor just isn't worth it to me, especially when my insurance covers rentals for an extra $1 a month (and towing for the same). An extended warranty is less about insurance and more about profit margin. We all suck it up and pay insurance, but when it comes to repairs, I'll stash a rainy day fund. Also, you don't always have to go to Toyota (or a dealer). I tend to look for the middle grounded reports vs. the good/bad. Like reviews on Amazon... lol... don't even get me started.

I won't knock these people paying around $1K for it. But anything above that, sorry, you've been had!

I agree with you. I don’t buy warranties on anything ever because they usually don’t work out in the customer’s favor statistically. I also agree, if I got 10 years/100K or whatever for around $1000, I would consider that reasonable and may even buy that myself (but I have a couple years still on my ‘21 to decide that and shop around with Wolverine or whoever). All it takes is for one of the dozen or so computers we have on these trucks to shit the bed, or a valve cover leak, etc… and a $1000 warranty pays for itself and more. But yeah, $2600 or even worse, $4000+ like some dealerships try to swindle people for a warranty on a Toyota, they can pound sand. I buy Toyotas because of their proven reliability.

Just a random thought from a recent experience. We tend to concentrate on cost of parts and the extremely ridiculous cost of labor to install those parts. What's neglected is the diagnostics required to get to the parts & labor like I just experienced with my recent fuck up. Even knowing what was wrong and involved components wise, the dealer was looking to hook me for nearly $1000 to do teardown and diagnosis which I immediately declined and picked it up. Had I been in a situation like most owners without the knowledge obtained from this site, after teardown, diagnosis, parts, and that labor, I would have been on the hook for nearly $3000 to repair what happens when you spark a domelight bulb without disconnecting a battery. As it is, I'm at $800 in parts plus a few hundred tomorrow morning when they reprogram and register my key fobs and the new ECU I installed.

It takes big money to find out how much more big money you gotta spend! o_O

That’s pretty sweet that the new design clutch is covered, I didn’t know that.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe it’s a 7yr/100k B2B total, from day one of your ownership.

It's things like that why I'm glad I got the extended warranty. ;)

I got it and if you offroad your truck its super worth it. I had it on my last truck and it paid for itself like 3x over. transmission, torque converter, 4 axles, and a few other things here and there, all replaced under the 125k mile platinum warranty, so I got it again on my new tacoma.
