Plastic bedliner damage - any way to touch this up?

Well, 4 months into my Tacoma LEASE, I finally transported something heavier than a bag of mulch in the bed.

I helped my neighbor pick up a "big green egg" knockoff. Apparently this was a terrible idea. I've had plenty of trucks with different bed liner types, but never had anything that weighed less than 500 lbs do this sort of damage.

I now have a half dozen deep white scratches in the plastic bed floor. Now, I know it's a truck, this isn't the end of the world - but holy cow this was a surprise - and I'm not at all confident the lease company will see this as no big deal when I go to turn the truck in.

Is the factory bed really this susceptible to damage or was this just a bizarre side effect of the 150 pound ceramic lump I was moving?

My real question is - is there anything I can do to make these scratches less obvious? A heat gun? Chemical treatment? Armor-all?

Bed mat. Slap it in when you return it.

Anyone remove light white scuffs from their bedliner? Would a magic eraser clean up that kind of stuff?

It's a truck bed. It's gonna scratch. It's plastic. It's not gonna rust or deteriorate from scratches. Don't worry about it.

Do get the OEM bed mat though. Does wonders to prevent things from sliding around back there.

This was one of the first things I tried. No effect. I'm actually leaning towards a heat gun.

And seriously, 5 (?) trucks under my belt, plenty of bedliner damage, but this was dramatic and unexpected.

    Pics coming.

You don’t have the warranty for damages on a lease ?

Yeah but what are you comparing to? Trucks with a steel bed that was bedlined? I have some good scuffs from hauling an old fence to the dump. I then immediately bought a bed mat lol.

For real, I'm not bashing the Taco, but probably three plastic liners, one line-x, one used roll-on who knows what it was liner. I certainly damaged liners before - but mostly by doing something stupid, or sliding something very heavy around (or bad forklift operators). One of the benefits to the taco was the plastic bed so I figured I didn't need to spend a couple hundred bucks on a liner for a lease.

I read a gazillion taco threads but somehow missed the repeated "get a bed mat" comments, probably because I downsized to the taco thinking I didn't really need to haul anything for the next couple of years. I guess I'll get a bed mat. :frusty:

Did you tie the load down? This has potential to become a great Friday thread.

Get yourself a bed mat. And some tie down straps. A cargo net helps too. The cargo net will keep those black trash bags from flying out while you're driving.

Yes, things are being made cheaper under the guise of being better. I can remember when pick up trucks had wooden bed floors and hook and chain tailgate latches.

The concern is that it's a lease, not that there are scratches. I think.

OEM or not, mine is a non oem and it works great. It's flat rubber. Hard to jack it up. Although I do need to cut out some bits for the stiffeners I just put in.

This reminds me I really need to get the bed mat.

Also, I took the warranty for damages on my lease for pretty much this exact reason, and so I could do some light offroading without stressing so much.

Big Green Egg or Kamado grills are large ceramic pots, typically the undersides are unfinished so instead of a glass smooth slick surface you have exposed ceramics...AKA sandpaper. Dragging it across the composite bed is like taking a rasp to the top of your oak dining room table.

It's scratched, not destroyed. A simple "touch-up" can be done, it won't make it look like brand new, but will tone down the white gouge marks: Dab a little PVC primer (solvent primer for glueing PVC plumbing) on a rag, wipe down the scratched surface only. Avoid getting the primer on the unscratched areas (it will take the shine off) It may take a couple of swipes, but it will turn the white fuzzy surface a dull black.
