How hard is it to replace the pinion bearing?

Whats your level of mechanical experiance? Do you have any experience with differantials?
If you don't. It's not something you want to try yourself.

We all have a different meaning for hard.

One of those things if you have to ask .

Thinking about this some more .

If one wanted to do this as a fun learning experience with a extra differential one had already swapped out .

No pressure if you pull things apart to discover the ring gear is beyond saving because a failed pinon bearing impacts the ring gear the second it starts to fail .

It has been very long since it seemed setting up differentials was a weekly job if I wanted the Car Friday in my case Young and Clueless and High Horsepower was not a good mix.

It would take a learning curve to recall just what the patterns should look like .

Im somewhat mechanically inclined. More so than your average person. I dotn really have experience in gearing or anything like that if that is a part of this. The problem im having is my truck has been making a noise only when im accelerating or slowing down and the sound gets faster the faster i go and vice versa. It sounds like when your brakes stick and wear uneven they get that spot that will rub every rotation but its not brakes because i just redid the rear (where the sound is coming from) i thought maybe a tooth in the diff may be broken but it drives perfect doesnt slip or jerk around just makes thos sound.

Also i disconnected the drive shaft from the round plate that is connectdd to the front of the rear diff and i can wiggle that round plate coming out of the diff (believe its called the yoke) up and down left and right. That is supposed to be solid and have no play, correct?

The gear oil is just pouring out past what is left of the pinon seal correct ??

When the meshing of the gears changes it can sound like a host of demons howling .

Had you done anything that may have broken a tooth off the ring Gear ??

The oil is drianed right now and truck has been sitting for about a year i drive it last week and heard the noise its more of a metallic like sound but have done nothing to break a tooth. Obviously it was full of oil when i drove it. I drained it when i put it in the garage to try and diagnosd this problem. The sound is more of almost a clunking. I just donf know how i would have broken a tooth is thats the case. Maybe i will pull the third and see if any teeth are missing. How hard is that going to be? I just pull the what is it 12 or 14 bolts and the 3rd comes out with the gears together right?

I wont have to pull it completely apart just to check the gear right? And slide the axles out a bit to pull the 3rd.

It’s not hard per se but it will require some technical/mechanical finesse, a press, some bearing pullers, and a inch/pound torque wrench like this one https://www.jegs.com/i/JEGS/555/M19...1Q4vL61hp6n629iEPIwdNlhrNWc_9pvkaAr5jEALw_wcB

If your not changing gears just put the shims back where they came from. You should still run a pattern check and be able to tell the difference between a good and bad gear gear pattern though.

Start familiarizing your self with Toyota diffs here

    This one specifically http://gearinstalls.com/humes.htm

The process of learning how to work on a diff and set up gears how as more then paid for it self.

Sure it's not a wheel or axle bearing?

the only advice I can give that hasnt been given is use either Japanese bearings or American made bearings, nothing from China. Expect to pay for the quality. The NTN - Made in the USA bearings for my boat trailer were 2/3rds more than the same Chinese manufactured bearing. If the choice is a $150 saved using Chinese bearings or broke down on the road in the middle of Baja with the truck, trailer and boat because of a smoked bearing, ill spend the $ every time.
