I’m wanting to install my roof rack but I’m unsure if I should even attempt in the winter. Anyone have any experience with Permatex Permatex Black Silicone Adhesive Sealant and low temp curing? It’s going to be 30-45 degrees here this week.

Also to anyone who has installed a roof rack, did you silicone around the bolt holes AND in the holes/on the bolts? Or just around the holes? I’ve seen some specifically recommend putting a good glob into the bolt hole and some specifically say to avoid the threads. Thoughts?

None of the above, use urethane brother!, your windshield is held down with urethane so that's where I put my trust on. Silicone is not good, marine grade or not...apply some urethane, it will allow flexibility without separation (silicone will separate, butyl is ok but it can dry) and you'll be good for decades!

I’ve used RTV silicone for years, in the Military as well and it’s worked fine. My buddies who have either installed a roof rack or removed them and needed to fill holes all use silicone with zero issues.

Some of this Some of that
I used the same black silicone when I installed my prinsu. I used it heavily when installing the river nuts and put a thick layer on the threads of the bolt before installing it. I also put it on the bottom of the aluminum spacer (the side that contacts the cab) that goes in between the rack and the cab. You should be ok if it’s 45 out. Install it as early as you can on a warm day so it sets up well

Did you apply it in winter? Any curing issues?

Thanks for the advice. I have heard people state that silicone is not rated for years of outdoor use out in the sun with extreme heat and cold.

I used a Hershey kiss dollop of clear silicone on the roof rack holes and then thread locker on the bolts. No leaks so far

I agree and honestly man all it takes is one crazy driver to hit you and the whole truck build regardless of time and effort can be gone in an instant

exactly the same here. This was done a few weeks ago and I’ve done car washes along with a few storms and no leaks at all. Rechecked bolts after a couple hundred miles too. Everything was fine.

Anyone use clear or black silicone for flares? Will it work?

Silicone will cure in 24 hrs at 70 deg. It will take much longer at low temperatures but will be fine if just using as a sealant and no danger of rubbing off. As mentioned, it will not crack, peel, or otherwise break down for many, many years. I used it on my utility trailer light wiring entries 18 or 20 years ago and still looks the same as when it was put there.
