Hey guys. Can get a Pedal Commander from a guy at work pretty reasonable but I was looking to have my truck tuned eventually to maximize whatever performance I can get out of it. Is it worth getting the PC or just wait until I tune it? Will a tune have the a similar affect that the PC would and better responsiveness? Thanks in advance!

Pedal Commander doesn't really provide any performance benefits beyond throttle response; you can effectively get all the 'benefits' of a PC by simply pressing your accelerator down harder. If you are already planning on a tune, I wouldn't bother with the PC.

 Yeah I guess pushing that pedal a bit more would do it! Figured if getting a tune that would be the case.

Why wait on the tune? Budget?

No, just thinking of doing an exhaust system before hand. Figured I would do the smaller stuff like the intake and exhaust and then the tune.

Intake and exhaust are a very expensive $/HP gain, because there is very little.

The tune isn't going to make it a race truck, but all accounts say it does perk it up as well as improve driveability.

I see that you are a tuner however just a few states away lol. Any other upgrades you would suggest doing prior to a tune to maximize it?

Agree with you $/HP. I was able to pickup an TRD intake from one of our vendors for almost nothing as it was on his son's truck he totaled and I'm waiting to see if I can work something out on one the TRD catbacks from our parts department. Not looking for any massive power gains but making it drive a bit better with how its setup is the goal for right now.

Don't be enamored with the TRD branding. Because nothing that is TRD branded for these trucks was actually a product of Toyota Racing Development. So there is no magic.

However, I will say that the TRD exhaust to me (subjective) is the most pleasant sounding on these engines, since it was designed for them. Very few v6 configurations will ever sound crisp.

Tunes can be reflashed periodically to meet your evolving rig. Most of the tunes available already have a similar "pedal commander" option and are much more versatile.

I would opt out of the PC and put that money towards a tune. That's just me though, spend your money however you'd like!

    Tune it.

Intake/exhaust won't require you to get a custom tune for this platform (it's not FI). The TRD intake might help you gain a little throttle response and shifting smoothness (it's mostly just a filter and top of airbox that says TRD on it) but a catback yields 0 performance gains. They do sound and look good though.

I had a pedal commander for a few weeks and didn't like it all that much. The eco settings created such a delayed response and the sport settings were just too much for me (especially the ultra sport setting or whatever it was called.. Absolutely insane and not viable ever unless you just want to spin your tires) . I tend to drive the speed limit and don't care how long it takes to get there while I perform the skinny pedal magic.

Not enamored at all lol. Work for a Toyota dealership so I can get employee discounts on stuff. I do have to say the exhaust is the best sounding out of them, agree there.

I offer remote tune option *if* you cannot locate a local tuning resource :D: https://kdmaxprotuning.com/locations

Since I would adjust the tune for free for owners I work with then no, I'd take care of the worst part about the truck and get it tuned right away. Should you decide to kill performance but add capability with a lift/oversized tires/re-gear, or just weight in general, then you get free adjustments to accommodate. Free over time as you build is awesome ;)

Should we have a newer tune version down the road after you have been setup for 45+days then upgrades for in-person are typically $100 or $75 for remote bundle owners. Here's some recent reviews of the tunes: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/kdmax-pro-xt-tune-by-paparee-and-twtaco.713699/

definitely should go with the KD Tune over the pedal commander

This post pretty well shows the intake and exhaust are no benefit even at significant HP/TQ gains over stock. Save your $ unless you are targeting a 400+ HP 3GT.

Another thread somewhere here on TW had appx. 90% of folks that tried a throttle controller liked them. I'm one of them. No more power just much better throttle response, sluggishness gone. Works really well with my little 4 cyl. 4X4, auto. Mine is a Sprint Booster, They always offer full refund if returned within 30 days for any reason... Better yet, will the guy at your work let you try his, appx. 10 min to hook it up enough to know if you like it or not. you will know immediately if you like it. Like said in post #14, low settings, way too sluggish, highest settings, way too jumpy, mine stays 1 notch above center & really feels great. Nobody knows what you will think of one, but if you have a chance to try one, then you will know. I promise, it is nothing like just tromping the pedal to the floor. If you get a chance try one for yourself & let us know what you think.
