Just changed my PCV valve. Very easy and straight forward. At 110,000 miles it had a good rattle but not as good as the new one. There was residue on the old valve. For $6 it was easier to replace with OEM new one instead of clean it out. Plus the peace of mind.

Finally changed the PCV valve yesterday. Wasn't hard with the right tools. Didn't have to move anything really. Used a deep 3/4 socket, socket extension, and socket wrench. Thats it. Pulled the hose off using the clips. Removed the old PCV. It still rattled but figured i can clean it later and reuse it again on the next 100k change. Compared the old with the new one. Installed the new one. The new PCV threads seem to be tapered. I screwed it in tight, did not torque it. Reconnect the hose (which i should have inspected, but i can do that later), and that it! easy peasy! Heres is a pic....

Didn't read whole thread but they rarely need replacement.
Take it out, shake it and if it rattles it's still good.
If not, hit with brake cleaner and WD40, compressed air and then shake again.
If it still doesn't rattle you can think about a replacement.
Obviously make sure to remove any visible crud/gunk if any.
Mine was still perfect at 185,000 miles

I replaced my PCV valve yesterday. Less than $9 shipped from Amazon for factory part (looks to be made by Aisin). The new one is a little larger than the old one. Old one was 19mm and I don’t have a 20mm socket. A 7/8” socket worked pretty to install the new one.

Old one is original and has 130,000 on it. Still rattles but looks like hell. Def past time to replace it. Took 10 mins, no problems encountered. I used a wobble extension on my ratchet which may have made it easier.

ETA: I just realized I ordered part number 12204-31030 and they seem to have sent me 12204-28030. That's prolly why it's a different size. Crap, I wish I'd have noticed that. Still seems to work fine though?

Probably worth spending another $9 to get the correct one.

Agreed, I will swing by the dealer and pick one up. I'll try to get a refund on the incorrect PCV valve that I was sent which shouldn't be a problem since I ordered the correct one but was sent an incorrect one.

It’s a $5 part. Just replace it and don’t worry about it for another 100k Miles. My old one rattled ok at 110k, but the new replacement was demonstrably more free moving.

I also am having this issue but my current conditions may be causing it, 3500 miles on mobil 1 full synth, 0F to -20F days in MN during this time and 15min drives to work everyday as it has been snowing like crazy so we use the truck.
I changed the oil and it was not like that in the rest of the oil. Seemed to be just at the top. Mech friend told me to check or replace PCV valve to help engine breathe better. Bought a new part since im at 75k miles. Not OEM and doesn’t seem to have the grommet, which I couldn't find on the OEM part I took out either.

I’m glad people are mentioning tapered threads cuz I got freaked out seeing it only go in like half way. Came here to find out why. Checked new installed valve with the engine running by dropping oil on it and it didn’t bubble or suck in so I’m hoping the job is done. Little nervous for the freeway drive tomorrow. I’m thinking of ordering OEM part and installing it anyway for ease of mind.

One other thing is the hose doesn’t feel as firmly attached to this NAPA part as it did on the OEM you can see the ridges on the head that are more sharp on the left. I just pulled the hose and it slid off the replacement part even with the tension clippy thing.

*Update!!* I bought a 1/2” drive 19mm socket and 5” extension with a 1/2” drive torque wrench and it threaded all the way in like butter. Torqued to 20ftlbs and done. So much relief. I would suggest to anyone to not use a 3/8” drive. It did not have enough power behind it, atleast in my case. Also, ordered OEM part on ebay for $9 and will be installing that in a few days just to be safe.

Just changed my pcv valve and I used a 3/8” drive set. Had to use a cheater bar to get it out. Didn’t know the threads were tapered, so I used blue locktite and put the new one back in using the 3/8” drive and tightened by hand. Checked with a torque wrench, it clicked at 20, so it might be a little tighter. The 3/8” drive handle was short, so I don’t think it is much more than 20ft-lbs.

I just replaced my PCV valve today just because I have 250,000 miles on my 2009 DC Prerunner TRD Sport. It was super gunked up, but still rattled. The PVC was super cheap, so why not just replace it.

Just my $0.02, but I did this job after running my engine for 1-2 minutes to warm up. Just make sure you aren’t warming it up too much to not burn yourself on the engine. It will make the PCV valve crack loose a little easier. I used a breaker bar with minimal force to break it free. I also added a tiny bit of gasket sealer on the upper part of the threads making sure to keep them away from the lower threads. I then hand tightened and let sit for almost an hour before torquing down to 20 ft/lbs. I read other comments that thread sealant wasn’t necessary, but just felt a little more comfortable adding it. I’ve read other forums where people used it, so didn’t think it would hurt anything. Definitely still need to replace the hose connected to the valve along with other vacuum hoses. Most of mine are pretty cracked. Hope this helps someone out!
