Thought the rear main seal was leaking, 2017 TRD Sport 4x4 with 89,000ish miles. Anyways it may have been the PCV valve leaking or the PCV valve that caused the rear main to leak. It is a 10 dollar check valve, pain in the ass to get at, but worth checking to avoid a big repair.

Was it stuck closed? Looks pretty gunky.

I just changed mine on 100 000 mile 2012 and it was stuck open.

I pull mine about once a year, blast it with carb cleaner, blow it out gently, and make sure it rattles.

Yep, just every other oil change should do it.

I too had the same experience. Noticed my rear main seal was leaking. Thought well maybe my PVC needs replaced. Did that and oil leak stopped . My 2017 has currently 230k+ mi and definitely gonna replace PVC again so don't have that scary moment again .

Near the left valve cover, inner side, near the rear.

Doing mine along with spark plugs when I hit 50K. Just seems smart.

Changed the one on my brother’s Tundra 5.7L and it broke as soon as we put a socket on it, due to being so brittle. Hard to tell if it was clogged that way, but at least we know it’s good now.

Just swapped mine @ 125K. Aside from a little discoloration, it looked and functioned as new.
Last one I looked at before that was on the Tundra, at something like 225K. Same thing.
Might have something to do with driving habits, I suppose.

At least in my experience, and fortunately for that vast majority of automobile owners that have no ideal what a PCV valve is, I think the average vehicle could go from cradle to grave on the original valve without an early demise.

    Cheers!

You are not wrong. I mean, I just got a recall notice for a weeping HPFP. The symptom noted was raw fuel smell. Funny thing as I just looked at it while the oil was draining. Folks don't even crack the hoods these days.

My take is that it's mostly unlikely to cause a problem, but unfortunately if it does happen to clog and become problematic, you probably won't know until it starts to cause other issues, like the RMS leak for example due to higher crankcase pressures. So for me it's easy to throw it into the rotation with the spark plugs, since the part is super cheap and installs right there while you're in there doing the plugs. I expect to see no clogging in the one I remove.

I think also the amount of blowby and quality of the oil vapors that go through the PCV ultimately determine whether or not it's going to clog. But it's so cheap I'd like to just throw a new one at it when I do plugs.

While you are in there changing the spark plugs makes sense and should be the perfect milage/time to change the PCV.
