I have a base 2020 OR 4x4 6spd manual tacoma. And im confused on its payload capacity. According to the toyota website, specs section for the 6pd manual says payload is 1135lbs. But it points you to this note.
"Payload capacity is the calculation of GVWR minus curb weight and should be used for comparison purposes only. The maximum amount of Passenger and cargo weight your vehicle can carry is a load carrying capacity indicated on the label on the driver's door jamb."

So I went and looked at my truck at it says 945lbs.

So what is the difference between payload capacity and load carrying capacity. Seems to me like it should be the same and not 190lbs less. My truck has no options put on by S.E.T so it does not have the sticker that says your payload has been reduced by such and such amount. Help me understand the difference as I dont see why the door sticker reduces the trucks capacity.

What reduces it? Access vs double cab, 4wd vs 2wd, add ins, etc. Door sticker is right. Other number is theoretical.

Toyota's website compensates for access and d-cab.

The specs are most likely showing a Base Off Road, start adding Sunroof, Leather, and Accessories and it will go down.

You have the double cab long bed which reduces payload.

A really good question, and one that despite Google, NTHSA site, I have been unable to find a solid answer as to why the Toyota Tacoma specifications payload differ from the door sticker (the tire sticker) even for models without options or added accessories. It's clear that added options and accesories will add to the curb weight and reduce your payload. The added yellow sticker is also understandable, anything added after it left the factory by the dealer (or "processor") includes a "subtracter" number from the tire sticker payload rating, I found dealer info indicating that.
All I've found is speculation, mostly incorrect. I can speculate too - perhaps the curb weight "specs" are some lightest weight case for each model version during design and initial prototypes, without a single accessory, but in the end when the vehicle actually leaves the factory with accessories or options, or even none of those, it is weighed, and that curb weight is subtracted from the GVWR to determine the final payload printed on the tire sticker. Options and accessories added at the factory explain the difference from the specs to the sticker. Accessories added by the dealer are also accounted for by the yellow sticker from what I've read. But differences without accessories or options, the only sound explanation I've found is that they lie in the brochures and in the specs. :D I found the same issues on the RAM sites and other truck sites.

    https://www.jdpower.com/cars/shopping-guides/what-is-gvwr-on-a-truck
"A vehicle’s curb weight is the weight of the vehicle by itself, excluding any added load from passengers, cargo, accessories or other items separate from that of the vehicle’s original manufactured parts and equipment. Curb weight does include the weight of gasoline, oil and other fluids necessary for operation. Curb weight is generally provided by the manufacturer, but you can also determine this at a vehicle weigh station."
I don't know if the above statements are true regarding what is included in curb weight, other sites repeat this, but one I found said "may" include a full tank of fuel. I have not found a requirement by the NHSTA that the manufacturer must include a full tank of fuel in curb weight, and have not found where Toyota has stated that their "curb weight" includes fuel.

I posted the below in another thread on the subject. I do find its interesting that for my 2019 SR Access cab 4 cyl - utility package (no back seats) and no other options, the difference between the Tacoma specs payload of 1620 lbs differs from my 1500 lbs sticker rating by 120 pounds. 21 gallons of fuel @ 6 lbs/gal = 126 lbs. Who knows, haha:

everything you put in or on the truck, reduces your payload. running boards, skid plates, braces, lifts, topper, bed mat, racks, light bars, EVERYTHING... it all adds up, even a little at a time. Ski

I know this is a few months old now, but I just found it, too. Trying to decide on what to do about leaf springs lift etc. since my rear dropped to level with front after adding a topper.
2020 DCSB OR shows #945 on the door. If I subtract my Leer topper #200, family of 4 @ # 565, family dog #70, I am left with a "load capacity of #110. WTF are you suppose to do with 110lbs? Figuring/hoping Toyota is playing way safe with that number

I've had 2300 lbs of OSB sheets in the back plus a topper. I also have two extra leaf springs per side. It squatted a little.
