So I’m having a common issue when I’m engaging park it doesn’t engage park right away. I know that a vehicle will roll a little when putting it into park, but I don’t think that’s it.
It will roll for a bit until I can hear and see the shifter *click* into park. One time it rolled a good 6in before clicking.
    I have an 05 V6 4x4 automatic.

Use the parking brake. That click you hear is the tang on the gear that locks it into park. It can get worn and also break. So get used to using your parking brake

I use my parking brake every time I park. Are you saying I should keep it in neutral with the parking brake? How do I fix the tang?

Also I don’t know if it’s related, but when I put it into drive it aggressively does it and I can hear/feel the driveshaft jolting into place.

I’d adjust the rear brakes. This will help with it rolling forward “more”.

How often does it do this?
Did you really only start getting concerned when truck rolled “6 inches”?

What may be happening is the parking break and rear shoes are not adjusted.
This in turns let’s the truck roll forward “fast” and the parking pawl slams into the pawl gear.
Depending on where the gear is indexed when you turn the truck off, will determine how far the truck “rolls” before it drops in the parking gear stop.

Here is an example of a parking pawl and gear stop.

It happens more often than not, I’ve been curious about it for a while but only started to question it after that longer role.
It more bugs me than concerns me, I dislike something not working or working improperly and I don’t know what it is.
I didn’t think it was the trans just because it doesn’t have any other issues besides the aggressive shift to drive.

How can I know for sure if it’s the parking prawn and if it is how do I get it fixed?

As far as the parking pawl goes, if it locks in and doesn’t roll any more.
I’d leave it alone. To fix it, you have to take apart the transmission.
Best option would be have the brakes and parking cable adjusted.
Use the Parking Break, And call it a day.

Again, if it is locking in. I wouldn’t worry too much. The delayed engagement isn’t too concerning to me.
If anything let off the brake pedal slow and let it fall in easier. This will help save wear on the pawl.

I suppose there is a chance you have some weird electrical issue going on.
That might be causing a delayed engagement. But I’ve never heard of it on these truck.
Usually it’s a delay going from P to D. Never heard of it while going TO Park.

    Almost.

    Stop, keeping foot on brake

Shift to neutral, foot on brake.

    Apply parking brake

Foot off brake and confirm e brake holding vehicle

    Shift to park

This lets the e brake do the work and the trans be the back up. Much less trans strain, regardless of being a pawl problem or not.

If you are using your parking brake and its still rolling, then that seems to indicate the parking brake needs to be adjusted asap..
And it sounds like you park on a decent hill? As others said, always a good idea to use the park brake to actually hold most the weight while the trans (when in P) holds little to none. Doing so will eliminate almost all of that "bang" you hear when shifting out of park after. And while Im sure all cars are designed to take the stress of your average driver parking on a huge hill, tossing it in Park and walking away, using the park brake is still a great idea.

FWIW, I have heard that the parking pawl on the A750 series is pretty beefy.
That’s not to say, you can’t break it. Or you should not use the parking brake.
I just happened to come across video where a Toyota Tech said the pawl actually pretty large to others he had seen.

Park Pawl Assembly, A750 (Park Pawl Is .484” Thick, 4.950” Long)

And I also believe the Toyota Tacoma manual says to use the parking brake. UNLESS the outside temperature is near freezing or below. I have had my parking brake freeze and stick.
It makes a horrible noise when it breaks free, and it usually breaks free better in reverse.
