Does anyone have experience painting previously bed linered rock sliders? I want to knock down the sparkle shine on my new sliders and want to spray paint paint them to accomplish that. Anyone done it?

My sliders aren’t bed lined but I used the matte black Rustoleum in a rattle can to put a new coat on mine after I bought them used. The previous owner had just painted the bare metal black.

The Rustoleum worked like a charm and I don’t see why it wouldn’t work on bed lined sliders to cover up the sparkle since it’s just a rattle can.

My go-to for bed liner stuff is Upol Raptor liner. I love the stuff. You can get tintable too. I’ve had good luck. Not too shiny…

I sprayed all of these in my garage with a 60 gal air compressor.

Your best bet would be to call a Linex shop and get their thoughts. I could see it having adhesion issues and turning into a mess.

I bed lined my nerf bars, went over it with scotchbrite, then sprayed with rustoleum matt black to get rid of the sparkle... came out great.

Not worth the trouble in my honest opinion it will fade to matte faster than you think but....

You should have no issues with rattlecan over most bed lining systems either paint before full cure (usually less than 24hrs) or scuff lightly (we use purplish scotch Brite pads) wipe down and paint.

Just did it a month ago... no flaking but time will tell. The scotch brite was purple and used it lightly... just wanted to hit the high spots and scuff it up a bit.

Hey fellas. This is the most recent thread I saw on painting sliders. I know this question has been asked probably a billion times but I just want to get some opinions/ advice on my particular case. I ordered some RSG sliders bare metal, weld on version. I spent a pretty good amount of time cleaning them up real good. I first used some really strong alcohol and a microfiber towel and wiped them off real good. I took a wire wheel to all of the welds and the high filth areas. Also scrubbed every inch of them with a gray 3M scuff pad. I wiped them down again with the strong alcohol and a new microfiber towel to where they looked pretty darn clean.
I then did three coats of Rust-Oleum green self etching primer. Now my main question is, should I lightly sand down the primer coat before applying the top coat of Rust-Oleum black high performance enamel which is a gloss finish. I'm pretty sure some people skip sanding down the primer and I want to get this right the first time. Will the high performance enamel adhere to the primer pretty well as is or should I scuff it up a bit with some 400 grit sandpaper or a gray 3M pad? Then wipe them down one last time with some alcohol to get them real clean before painting? I am going to use some 3M grip tape on the areas where my family and I will be stepping to get in and out. Any sincere advice would be much appreciated.

I did 3 coats of the self-etching primer then followed with 2-3 coats of truck bed spray. I did not scuff the primer but did somewhat scuff the metal. I did this for my sliders and skids. I had a few chips since then but all the paint comes off vs some of the layers. It's like the primer didn't really bond to the metal.

Oh gotcha. Yeah that is kind of weird if you scuffed the metal. Did you use acetone or alcohol like I did to get the oil and stuff off of the metal? I have gone through several of these threads trying to grab bits and pieces of information to ultimately decide what products I wanted to use and how to go about it. But I have not found anyone saying that the paint will not Bond properly to the primer if it's not scuffed up first. Of course I want them to come out good this first go round but if not it is what it is and I will try something different after I get them welded on. I've heard good things about the Rust-Oleum hammered roll on. That would probably be my next attempt if this one fails in some way. The POR 15 sounds super legit but it makes me a little nervous because some people say if the prep is not perfect it could end up being a disaster so I decided not to go that route. Anyway thanks for the response man and hope someone else can chime in about the whole scuffing up the primer scenario.
