So itt seems there’s not much of a good choice to be had.

I just sprayed my dash rings with black acrylic enamel and the surface bubbled up so that’s not gonna work.
(how do I get that off besides sanding?)

I’ve already wet sanded the radio housing deal and applied adhesion promoter.

I need a semi gloss or matte finish that doesn’t smell like cancer, isn’t going to be soft, but lays down nice enough so it doesn’t have to be worked when dried.

Does this exist? Do I need to go get some plasti dip and go full JDM?
    :annoyed:

The best way to paint plastic is prep. Start off by cleaning the part very well with some mineral spirits or denatured alcohol to remove all oils. Also a good idea to lighty sand it with some 320 or 400 grit sand paper to promote primer adhesion. Use a couple coats of filler primer then sand down any flaws. Prep and clean again. Then spray with your base coat of your choice. Duplicolor or rustoleum is a good choice. Add a few coats to allow for wet sanding with some 2000 grit and then clear coat with a compatible top coat. Then let cure for at least 48 hrs before handling.

I did everything right I just clearly misunderstood that adhesion promoter “primer” was not to be used solely as a primer. I’ve used it plenty of times and have no idea why this one time I decided not to use a primer on top of that but now my rings and head unit bezel are literal trash so I better get to sanding tomorrow...

I can’t use any types of strippers on this can I? Just elbow grease? Lolol

Brake fluid? These pieces are ABS if I recall I don’t know if it’ll react with that.

Strippers are handy but if you’re not careful about it they can burn you up...

You have to sand. There are no chemical strippers that are plastic safe.

    Ask me how I know.

If its abs check out sem sand free plastic adhesion promoter. Its a wet on wet promoter so top coat melts onyo promoeter .Currently working on a project with abs sheet
    https://www.semproducts.com/product/sand-free-adhesion-promoter/38363

That said I have had luck with lacquer thinner on a rag (damp not soaked ).Just rub until comes off .But I only did that on paint not fully cured .If not sure if you want to try it than yea sand .Safest way.

So guys I ended up attempting to hit the center part with some nicer duplicolor auto paint. It laid down nice. I wetsanded. Coat 2.

Waiting on clear to dry. Honestly it’s coming or great. I will post up some photos when I get home but I’m almost certain it’s gonan take.

I’m still shit wrecked on the dash rings but that’s fine, they’re small.

Here’s to hoping. Likely I will use some chemguys v38 and then some cleaner wax (with a black finishing hand pad) on it and reinstall everything.

    Pics soon. :fingerscrossed:

I did not want gloss but it was choice 2. oh well. Way better than silver. Hopefully it’ll buff?

    Anyone have a better idea?

    Looks good .
Duplicolor bumper and trim black is more satin black and works good on interior pieces . Its lacquer based though so it will attack freshly painted surfaces. Looks like it blushed? Sprayed in colder temps ?
Wont hurt trying to buff I guess but than again like you said looks better than silver

I used self etching primer and rustoleum 2x paint and primer flat black followed with 3 coats of duplicolor wheel matte clear coat. Very happy with the results. No orange peel look at anything. Did 3 coats of each lightly 10 min between.
