My next project on my Tacoma is to remove the interior trim pieces and painting them white.

I think my process will be to spray the pieces with adhesion promoter, 2-3 coats of spray paint, then 2-3 coats of satin clear coat.

My question for you guys is:

Does my process sound correct? Should I sand the pieces at all? Can I use primer instead of adhesion promoter? What are the best brand of spray paint for this sort of stuff? Best brand of clear coat and adhesion promoter? Any additional tips would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you in advance.

There’s a member on here that did it. Personally I would vinyl wrap them.

My best experience with painting interior trim was krylon fusion plastic paint. I converted a blue interior and a tan interior to gray and black. Use flat finish, i don't car what anyone says, any other finish will look too glossy. I've also heard good things about SEM products.

I took the interior all apart and did it in my garage, I used used prep/cleaner and adhesion promoter, it was very resistant to scratches and chipping you couldn't tell it was painted when I was finished.

I used adhesion promoter, color matched spray paint and matte clear coat. Only did the dash trim, but thinking about doing the door trim and steering wheel. See some other examples here.

I've had great success with Krylon Fusion. For me to learn about Fusion, I had a string of failures while I attempted to paint plastic using traditional paint. Finally one day, I was at my local Ace Hardware and saw a can of Fusion and tried it. It worked.

Many years ago I discovered plastic car interiors emit an oily plastic gas that is known as a plasticizer. This chemical will vaporize and build upon new vehicle's windshield to create a thin oily film. It was hard to wash off.

When plastic and vynyl that is made with a plasticizer is exposed to heat, it will release the vapor. This vapor causes traditional paint to peel. Fusion appears to bond with the plastic and avoids this condition.

I just used Fusion on my wheel flares. I know it will last for years.

I believe Krylon discontinued fusion a few years back. Only place I’ve ever found residual stock has been Ace. All the other big box stores have gotten rid of it long ago.

They’ve got a few new renditions now like krylon spraymaxx or something which has worked fine for me in other applications.

I’d personally opt for SEM, vinyl wrap, or hydro dip depending on what you want.

Used this on my interior to color match my custom center console and color match leather boots.
Would recommend, doesn't peel off, able to rub against it and not wear the color off on both the plastic and leather.

I see Krylon changed it to be Krylon Fusion All-In-One. I used two cans last week on the exterior trim. I better get to Ace and buy more before they run out to finish my bumper project.

I think this product would be good too.

I like the looks of this product.

I dyed my interior black in my Celica, and also sprayed painted my buddies interior white and orange in his Eclipse. The most important step is throughly cleaning the plastic. I filled my tub with dawn dish soap and hand washed and scrubbed every part. Then rinsed and dried with a clean towel. Then I sanded every part with 400 grit sand paper. Then rewashed and let dry. You need the surface rough to help adhesion. Then I sprayed the pieces with adhesion promoter. Let that dry and then sprayed 2-3 coats of dye/paint and let dry. I think my buddy ended up clearing his, but I didn’t do anything else after I dyed mine. The less gloss the less glare. His white made it extremely hard to see out of his windshield due to the white and all the glare. My black on the other hand looked factory and had little to no glare. Again we did the entire interior, dash and everything. If you’re just doing the trim pieces it won’t be as bad, but you probably will still get some glare around the radio trim. Something to think about.

    Good info here, thanks guys.

My 05 interior, as you would expect 17 years later, has a number of blemishes on interior trim and I've been thinking about doing some touch up. Will refer to this thread when I tackle it.
