Thinking about painting my chrome back bumper matte black. I know I could plasti dip it but if I was going to go the more permanent route what would you guys suggest using? Has anyone know here done this and would share pics?
    Thanks

    Crome sucks to paint over...
I've had mine plastidipped 3 years now.

Chrome isn't too good to paint over. You can always just get a black base model Tacoma rear bumper.

You will need to sand blast the chrome off before you can paint, and if you want to go that route I would just paint match it. You could probably have it done at a body shop for around $500.

I bought a new bumper "skin" for the sport model (~$140), which comes in primer black. I decided to get it Line-x'd instead of painting it but I think that's your best route. Based on the research I did it's too expensive to strip and paint a chrome bumper if you're not willing to go the plasti-dip route.

I also bought a bumper "skin". Got it from CarID for about $120. You'll reuse all your OEM bolts, fasteners and plastic step pieces. Took about an hour to swap everything over with impact tools. Being a 2008 you may have some rust to contend with.

I originally painted over my chrome surround with some dupli-color, color match spray paint. I scuffed up the chrome for better adhesion and for a week it looked great but after sitting in the sun for a few days the chrome underneath the paint started to react in certain areas and created sort of veins underneath the paint. I ended up completely sanding off the chrome with a DA and repainted and it has looked great ever since. Just have to be careful when sanding it since the plastic can heat up quickly and melt. There is also a dealer on ebay that sells color matched grills for around 200 shipped.

I just plasti dipped my grill today and it looks great. Seeing as an above comment said they had it on their bumper for 3 years I think I will go that route. Hope it holds up to our harsh, Atlantic Canadian winters.

Just find someone with a black metal bumper (like an SR model) who would appreciate a chrome one, and do a swap.

Have a burger afterwards, make a new friend.

Costs neither of you anything but time.

I use plastidip glossifier on top of the black plastidip to help protect from uv damage.

But will it affect the look? I love the matte black look, not to into glossy black at all.

If you think it's too shiny (its not gloss) you can always paint it or treat it with bedliner. Much easier to do that one than a chrome plated one.

They sell glossifier in matte and in gloss.
