Has anyone here bought a topper/cap/camper shell that was a different color than your truck and then paint it (or have it painted) a matching color? My Tacoma is Blue Ribbon and I cannot find a used topper in that color. Was wondering how difficult it would be to paint one myself (and do a decent job) or approximately how much it would cost to have it painted.

Prices for a professional job seem to vary by area. I would just call a few local paint shops and ask them for a price.

If you have a compresser, spray gun and ability to spray yourself...then I'd still call local shops to get a price and compare that to the cost you will pay for just the paint.

So my answer is...call a few local shops and ask.:hattip:

I bought a used topper from craigslist and its magnetic blue but I have a quicksand. Searched around few auto paint shops and was quoted as low as $300 and as high as $1100. Obviously I went to the cheapest one and paint match is probably around 90-95%. Probably would've gotten a better paint job for a higher price but Im happy enough for the quality. Prices varies for sure per location. Im based in Southern California btw.IMG_2068.jpg

I have been planning on getting my faded and scratched shell repainted lately. I got one quote for $500 and one for $800. I thought about painting myself but it would probably cost about $200 for materials and I'm sure I wouldn't be happy with the results if I do it myself.

I have tried spray cans on large areas with very little success.
I paint for a living so maybe I'm just picky.:notsure:

Where did you get it painted? I'm in socal as well. Every place I talked to locally only deals with insurance and won't even quote me.

I had my camper painted on my first taco in either Aliso Viejo or Laguna Niguel. Cant fully remember but i do somewhat remember it being around $200 this was about 8 years though.

Ok thanks. I'm up in Santa Clarita

That price would work for me although I know it's not gonna happen. I paid $240 for this 5 yo snugtop xtra vision. Even if I have to pay $500 I'm still not into anywhere near the original $2300 price

Check around and see if any of your local high schools have a vocational program, also check with your local tech colleges for auto body programs. If they have time and room some of them will take in projects for people and it can be inexpensive since they're students. I know a couple of people who have had things painted this way and had good results since the students were getting graded; there's an instructor who oversees it of course.

For as little paint as goes on the sides of a typical shell and the fact that you won't really see the top I'd probably spray it myself if you have the room. I've shot a couple of VWs with my inexpensive paint guns and they came out fine, just a lot of work since I was learning and had to fix mistakes.

I just picked up a white top this weekend and my truck is BSP. I called a few shops around me and they were quoting 550-600. I'm really thinking of going to maaco to do mine. I called them this morning and they said 250. It may not be perfect but I don't wanna pay an arm and a leg to have it painted for it to get scratched up

Body shop did mine for $400. Bought a gold shell and had it painted Indigo ink blue. It came out perfect and was still great shape when I sold it 5 years later.

I paid $300 to have mine professionally matched.

Rather than just spray MGM, they actually matched the shell to the level of fading that had occurred on my truck’s paint. It came out amazing, and looks identical.

I’m not a painter, and am glad I left it to the pros.

its a shop in Chino Hills close to Ontario, found the place through Craigslist. I’ll check my receipt tomorrow if I have the name or address since I couldn’t remember anymore.
