The paint on my '06 Tacoma is looking pretty shoddy these days. The roof and the hood have peeled like a bad sunburn. The trim above the wheel wells is all faded. I called a shop today that I've had do some body work in the past, and they told me they don't do full paint jobs, just "panels," which I assume means just specific sections of the truck. Is that typical in this day and age?

Should I just have the hood, roof, and wheel well trim painted in the hope they can match the rest of the truck (which still looks pretty good).

Any other advice on getting my faithful ol' Tacoma painted from folks who've been down this road already?

A few additions to make me feel cool.
Find a shop to do a full respray and know that the cheapest option is not the best. Probably $8,000 to $10,000 to be done well. If you know a decent paint guy who moonlights on the weekend that’s your best bet.

Actually not a bad idea but once you do. You cannot go back.

I had my old 2nd gen have the hood and roof painted in SoCal it was 1500 some punks keyed it later so insurance had them repaint the entire truck and that was almost 7k

I'm in the same boat, even found a shop that said they'd do the job for a decent price and it'd take 3 weeks from when I dropped it off, 6 weeks later I went down there and took it back untouched and stopped payment on the CC for the $2500 deposit. Most shops, inc the one I took it to make their bread and butter on fenders hoods and bumper repairs for ins companies, in and out, few want to do completes.

Maaco. Do the R&I work yourself. Have them respray it. If the bed is beat up/scratched, either have a spray-in liner done or do a DIY liner. Quality collision shops are busy with insurance work. Customer pay jobs don't pay the bills. Full repaints are time consuming and take up space, and they don't want to bear the cost of breaking old trim pieces, etc. They also don't want to mask that stuff off. Masking stuff off is for hacks.

This reply hits the nail right on the head  Unfortunately, good body/paint work is insanely expensive.

My '06 is in need as well. Now I'm concerned finding a shop. Where's Earl Scheib for $29.95.... yep just dated myself. Dropping $10k may not be in the budget. Will most likely wait as long as I can for repaint.

    Painting story:

Years ago I worked with a young fellow who had a old car with the same peeling issue. The metal was solid but the car looked pretty bad.

He did a good job with the sanding & masking and painted it in the parking lot of his apartment block using Rustoleum applied with a brush & roller.

The color was plain off white and walking by you really didn't notice anything out of the ordinary.

Without seeing your truck a good shop can paint the hood, roof, do some blends on the fenders and cab corners and it will look nice. Don’t paint the whole thing unless you have to. It’s 18 years old, does

They're afraid you'll faint in the office and hit your head at the price they want for a complete paint job.

my experience having a car painted is that it will be hit by a criminal with no insurance soon afterward. That or the new paint will fail very prematurely.

But most good shops don't want that work for the reasons I mentioned.

The earlier suggestion of finding a painter who does side work is also a good one.

An almost 19 year old 06 Tacoma is not even worth repainting since the value of the truck is low.

Earl Schieb $99 paint job in my youth. I notice you are in Sacramento; Rancho Cordova has an Earl Schieb near Sunrise and Folson.

I'm sure the price has gone up and the quality could not have gone down. Not a recommendation, only a mention.

It's 12k truck... doesn't mean he doesn't want it to look good.

I got my 09 repainted by Maaco. I got the 2 stage paint job which is a separate clear coat. The local maaco in my area does pretty good work it's not car show classic car quality but it sure did make my truck look brand new again.

By this, do you mean remove the silver emblems and stuff myself? Are they typically removable in one piece, or would I have to spring for new emblems and stuff?

Kelley Blue Book gives my '06 Tacoma Double Cab a ballpark value of $11,426. I'm not about to spend 10k on a paint job, but I would like to show my ol' truck some love.
