i want to get some paddles for the rear of my truck to run in the dunes, however i want to be able to run 4wd at the same time.. if i run normal 31s on the front, what size do i need for the back? do i need a 31 inch core which would make the tire about 33 inches including the scoops/paddles? or do i need more like a 29 inch core with the total diameter including scoops to be 31 inches?

Im not too keen on running 2wd out there on a nose heavy 4wd truck, and i go pretty hard out there, so i don't want to worry about any drive train bind even though its just sand..

If you don't have fiberglass fenders, keep the outer diameter including scoops 31" to avoid rubbing.

If you must run conventional tires in the front, pick one that has the same "revs per mile" spec as the paddle tires. This accounts for all the differences in loaded diameter, scoop compression on pavement, etc.

We have enough power to turn them but maybe not enough power to spin them and/or use as designed. I don't think miniscule differences in outside diameter will hurt anything in the sand so long as you don't have anything hard to drive on to get there. If you do throw a set of paddles on the rear post a picture because I don't think I have seen that before.

    thats some sound advice.

my truck is supercharged so that will help me a bit. plus i think its more about what paddle tires you use, like how many paddles and how large each paddle is.. im looking at some with 16, 1 inch scoops and they only weigh 26lbs vs your normal AT tire that weighs 40-60lbs.. its not like im daft enough to throw something on there that is built for a 700hp 2000lb sand rail, with 30 x 3 inch scoops :/

im on a 3 inch ome lift, and im not ready for full long travel yet as it is my DD, i don't think my wallet is ready yet either lol...

If anything, run a slightly smaller in the rear to avoid plowing of the front tires

^ ya i was thinking that too, paddles work better when throwing sand.. i'd rather drag them at high speeds when i cant get stuck than dig them at low speeds...

thx for the help guys i think ima go with the 29 core plus 1 inch paddles... ill report back

Correct. In the sand, the non-paddle front tires will just slip as necessary to prevent driveline binding. On hard surfaces, the OP could always just drive in 2Hi.

I've found a decent set of MT's will get you anywhere you'd like to go in the dunes, and that I run out of motor long before I run out of traction. They sure do look cool though.

This dude runs out of traction before he runs out of motor. Paddles are a prudent choice.

MTs are a little heavy, but a nice wide AT aired down to about 12 has gotten me really good results.. i have been in plenty of situations in glamis where i was traction limited and not power limited.. ever find yourself at the bottom of a "witches eye" of basically sinking sand? ever try to climb china wall?

another member here just hooked these up:
