2013-build date 2/13. P2420 code only. Gas cap was really suspect, replaced with a new OEM one. After clearing "Check Engine" Trac Off" MIL light, and driving a short time it still shows a "P2420 Permanent" & "P2420 Pending". Looks like the Vapor Canister is self enclosed with several non repairable internal parts including the Switching Valve which triggers the P2420 code. If it not a wiring/voltage problem, what else other than the Vapor Canister unit might log the lone P2420 code? (there are 2 different Vapor Canisters for the 2013 model, depends on your build date)

It could also be a broken wire on the vent valve control circuit, you need to check the vent valve circuit.

Pin 5 (Blue/White) should have battery voltage with the key on and the PCM should ground Pin 1 (Violet/White) when the vent valve is commanded on (you would need a bi-directional scan tool to do this).

Wiring diagram attached below assuming you have the 4.0L engine.

    Yeah.
Did you get the OEM one from a dealer? If so, it's probably good. If you got it from Amazon or elsewhere, you might try one from a dealer. My daughter lost one on the 4Runner and the Amazon one I got didn't fix it, dealer one did.

Thanks, I just scrolled through 455 pages of schematics looking for what you narrowed down to 20 pages!

I'm thinking that exactly what's happening. I bought the supposedly OEM cap from Amazon, now certain it's black market and bad. This afternoon the P2420 code has disappeared an now a P0441 and P0455. I'm almost certain I have 2 bad gas caps, and have a new one on order to pickup tomorrow from the local Toyota dealership. (i thought I could find a place to test gas caps for free, NOT!)

    Yeah.
Yeah, the one I got looked pretty legit. It was like $17, and I think the OEM one from the dealer was $38. Definitely worth the extra dollars, it cleared the code within a day.

Not saying that is your problem, but it's something to rule out.

Not that this has anything to do with your issue but how many miles and where are you located (Climate). I have a 2013 as well. Thanks.

I took the seal off the Amazon cap and installed it on the original cap, and so far it appears to be a drastic improvement. Really not wanting to be laying under the bed of the truck to test/disconnect/reinstall a new vapor cannister $$$
