Ok I have been reading most of the posts for the P0705 code and what I have done so far has not helped. '06 TRD off road

    Symptoms:
-Truck starts in both neutral and park
    -can move forwards and backwards
-no code is showing most of the time (does show P0705 sometimes)
-car will start in neutral and then idle for a minute or two then die
-when engine shuts it self off check engine, battery, oil, r/t temp lights come on
-when shifting fast from park to drive everything is fine
-when put in reverse neutral light comes on when it does it is faint or totally on also the park light comes on some times and is faint or flickers
-when it died for the first time it thew two codes p0705 and P0335 now P0335 does not show
    - can shift easily in all ranges inside and lever on transmission is easy to move.
-after running through gears truck dies when putting it in park

    what i have done:
-the threads have recommended cleaning all connections inside near the passenger kick board fuses and underneath on the Neutral safety switch and PRNDL sensor.
-lubed the snot out of the shifter lever on the transmission.

    questions:
-is there anyway to check to see if the PRNDL and Neutral safety sensors are bad?

Thanks for your time reading this post. I am looking forward to the responses.

P0335 is typically a crankshaft positioning sensor code, usually requiring replacement of the crankshaft positioning sensor. You can probably replace it yourself, I know on the 2.7L it isn't hard to get to, I would assume the 4.0L would be similar. The part itself isn't that expensive, so it might be worth a try.

P0705 is more complex. I would try fixing this problem first BEFORE addressing the P0335 code. It may very well be that code will never come back once P0705 is addressed. I found a link with two guys with the same year and engine as you and the fixes they found that worked for them.

^^^listen to @gearcruncher. He's the most knowledgeable guy I've ever seen in a forum when it comes to transmission (and probably a lot of other stuff too)

The issue is your park neutral switch is sending bogus inputs to the controller.

If water has gotten into the switch it will more than likely need replacement and it can be a real pain to remove.

This usually takes care of the P0705 code. It’s around $300. I’ve changed it on a couple of Tacomas.

I replaced my NSS only to have the problem still exist. After following Toyota's troubleshooting recommendations and might I add that it took a lot of work and time. I finally found the problem a broken, in the connector, wire at the NSS. Ordered kit from Amazon for $25. Just a suggestion for others who have this code come up. MY problem was electrical because there were no shifting problems. The 2 things I noticed after working on the problem was I had no D or 4 indicator light on dash and no cruise control. If you have this problem a quick and dirty test is to make a jumper with a pin at each end so it fits in the connector. jumper from pin 2 to the pin of the connector that is not lit. In my case it was pin 2 to 7. Still had no light so I went to the instrument Panel J/B #2 located behind the glove box on the right side. PB3 is the other side of the connector from the NSS. I jumped it with a 12v signal, use a meter to find 12v sig, and the light came on. That's when I new it was the harness. I figured it had to be at the connector, or I was hoping it was going to be there, I tugged on the wire for pin 7 and came off real easy. So when the NSS connector comes I will repair it. I used various schematics and diagrams to find this problem. Once I found the documents I needed it went pretty fast. The hardest part for me was figuring out how to take covers, etc off to get to these things. Oh couple more things; there is an ECU module next to the shifter that control (L and L2) and (D and 4) which is also in the ckt. in my case those ohmed out correctly. I used pins and hot glued them to my test meter leads to get into all these connectors.

    Tread revival!

Was wheeling today and after a big hit popped the good ol check engine light. Came up p0705. Wonder if I hit the gearshift or something that could have caused it.

Cleared and has not returned in the 100 miles home. Have reverse lights and everything seems good now:notsure:

Question is: why did it happen and is there anything I need to watch or replace so it doesn't happen again.?

Probably just jolted the trans and made the range sensor shift out of its spot for a second. If you haven't seen the code for 100 miles I wouldn't worry too much

Thanks, that's what I was hoping to hear but when you come down that hard and look up and see the light, only the worst is running in my head.

Did the same thing yesterday. Oil and coolant are good. Do you know how to reset the warning light?

Do you have a scanner ?

If your neutral safety switch is throwing a checking engine light , you need a scanner to get the light to turn off . The light will only turn off once the problem is fixed .
If you go into the scanner and clear the code ( P0705 ) and the code pops back up at your next start up , you will have to do more investigating . The neutral safety switch tells the transmission,s computer what gear you are in . Strange things will happen when you select drive , but the transmissions computer thinks you are in reverse .

Appreciate that. I have a Mac tools scanner but it’s reading scan error code. I think it’s busted or needs an update. Looking for a new scanner now.

I just ran the truck through the gears, turned it off, restarted it and the check engine light is gone! Dodged that bullet.

    I hope you are correct!

Be advised however that the NSS can be very intermittent before it fails hard. I'd wait and see if it comes back or not.

I agree with @Jimmyh . That switch can be an intermittent problem.

And it’s not always the switch. Sometimes it’s the connector at the switch.
I don’t know why, but early 2nd Gens seem to suffer from this more than later years.
They all however, suffer from the stupid nut corroding on to the switch. :frusty:
