Hey guys. So I just got an 05 tacoma w/ 121k on it about 2 weeks ago. Put about 500 miles on it and the CEL came on. I scanned it and it came up with p0441 and p0455. I erased the code and about 300 miles later (today) it came back on. Both times it came on when starting my truck at first in the morning. Today when it came on I looked at the gas cap and then noticed the plastic notched ring that holds the cap was not on correctly so I put it on correctly and then went to the gas station and filled the tank. Then after I filled the tank I drove home and the truck sat for about 20 minutes and when I went to start it it just kept cranking, but the second time I tried to start it fired right up. I didn't erase the code and it didn't go off after fixing the plastic ring thing.

I've done a little research on the code but found nothing conclusive. If anyone could point me in the right direction it would be appriciated.

I had the same code. Changed the carbon canister and gas cap which didn't fix it. Turned out to be the vapor purge valve.

The P0441 leads down a complicated troubleshooting area, but with the P0455 Code it leads to a Gross Leakage and the likely trouble areas are reduced to the below listed from the service manual:

    P0455 leads to these Areas:

    EVAP gross leak:
    • Fuel cap (loose)
    • Leakage from EVAP line (Canister - Fuel tank)
    • Leakage from EVAP line (Purge VSV - Canister)
    • Canister pump module
    • Leakage from fuel tank
    • Leakage from canister

Get a good garage to do a smoke test of the evap system. This should pinpoint the leak for you.

    The P0441 leads to these:

Purge VSV (Vacuum Switching Valve) stuck open.

    • Purge VSV
    • Connector/wire harness (Purge VSV - ECM)
    • ECM
    • Canister pump module
    • Leakage from EVAP system

Purge VSV (Vacuum Switching Valve) stuck closed.

    • Purge VSV
    • Connector/wire harness (Purge VSV - ECM)
    • ECM
    • Canister pump module
    • Leakage from EVAP system

    Purge flow.

    • Purge VSV
    • Connector/wire harness (Purge VSV - ECM)
    • Leakage from EVAP line (Purge VSV - Intake manifold)
    • ECM

If you are having problems starting your truck after fueling up, your problem is most likely that the purge valve is stuck open. If it sticks open it will suck fuel through the EVAP system with a full tank. Happened to me.

Where exactly is the "purge valve"? Is it the solenoid controlled rod in the back of the intake manifold?
