From what i have researched a common issue is for the oil control valve to be causing issues. Had shudderly vibration about 30-50 mph under light throttle i thought it was tranny or torque convertor so i changed it vibration has not changed.
One video said that the VVT solenoid or oil control valve could be going bad but not out of range enough to cause a check engine light. I have had this vibration issue for thousands of miles.
Never received a P0022 PD code until the other day.
So is it good idea to try cleaning the VVT solenoid or if this is causing the code is the solenoid usually completely bad ?
314K miles so i would not expect it to be clean.

    I assume you have a V6 engine.

You can test the solenoids by removing them and checking with a 12 volt source to see if they are sticking. It wouldn't hurt to replace the filter screens for the VVT Solenoids also.

Drop the driveshaft and check the u-joints. That's something you could do for free

Pull the plugs and coils for inspection. Check for signs of arcing through the coil boots

P0022 is for the drivers side camshaft being too far retarded.
I'd first start by checking the engine oil level, as the OCV is operated by oil pressure.
Next, I'd pull the OCV on the drives side and test/inspect the OCV.
Lastly, I'd inspect the OCV filter.

If that isn't it, you're pulling the valve cover and inspecting the timing chain/marks/
But I doubt that is your isuuse.

    All stock, baby!
If you only changed one VVT oil control valve, replace the other one too. I had a very similar situation with an occasional cam timing code on bank 1, also had the vibration around 40 mph that clearly seemed to be torque converter shudder. The vibration completely went away when I changed the bank 2 oil control valve. Only 118K on mine so if you got to 314K on the originals, that’s amazing.

Drivers side control valve tested 7.7 ohms at 64 F. Was able to get valve to actuate but had to toggle the connection to keep it constantly fluttering, maybe this is how it works by sending 12v volts off on off on like fuel injectors.
The valve seemed pretty clean to me.
Have not checked the passenger side control valve yet but someone said P0022 PD is for drivers side. I cannot find what the PD stands for but that is what my code reader displayed.

Passenger VVT oil filter was clean i would think drivers side would be the same. Took off both cam sensors and there were some carbon deposits on the tip, not sure if that could be causing P0022 code but its clean now.
Only thing have not done is check VVT oil filter on drivers side and the passenger oil control valve.

There are no sensors on the exhaust cams, that diagram shows all the sensors on the 4.0l.

So for a 1GRE engines there are only the 2 intake VVT cam sensors and the oil control valves?

In Tacomas yes, there was a dual VVT variant that had sensors and solenoids on all 4 cams that was used in the 09+ 4-Runner and 2010-14 FJ Cruiser.

Tacomas got the 2GR-FKS in 16 that was also dual VVT.

Now Im confused someone else said on 2nd Gen Tacos there was only 2 VVT cam sensors one for each each cam. I have 2007 Prerunner 1GRE 4.0 L.

There are 2, one on each intake cam. Toyota calls them VVT sensors but they are cam sensors.

Just had both of my VVT oil control valve Cam Sensors replaced today, Bank 1 showed a P0010 code on bank1 , told them to replace both, runs smoother now after a code was shown after check engine and Track light came on tuesday! WTF, right after Christmas Day? My shop took care of me for $650 parts, diag , tax,and labor . Hope that was a fair price.

I had to replace one of my OCV's after cracking the harness and I think the part was $110 and took me about 20 or 30 minutes to change. So if your shop used OEM parts, that alone would've been probably $225 out of that 650. Whether $400 in labor is fair is totally up to you.

These are not that hard to change and on top of engine. 650 is alot to change two small oil control valves. Ive got 314K mine looked clean but I sprayed them with carb cleaner and put them back on.
It was my cam magnetic sensors that were gunked up cleaned them and the VVT code has not come back since then.
