I'm looking for opinions on P-Rated all terrain tires. These will be going on a 2017 Tacoma SR 4cyl 4wd 5spd. I will be swapping out the steel wheels and Hankook H/T's (approx 61 lbs combined) and replacing them with SCS Ray 10's (21.5 lbs + Tire). I live in the northeast, so being able to handle all types of snow without swapping a dedicated snow tire is very important. I would consider a tire very good if I can get 4 winters and 50,000 miles out of them. As of right now I'm leaning toward the Falken AT3w because it is severe snow rated, quiet, and aggressive looking. The reason that I'm still considering other options is because the AT3w's are also the heaviest of the bunch. I'd like to keep the wheel tire combo as light as possible. I have not included every AT tire with a P-rating, just most of the popular choices. Please keep in mind the importance of snow performance and weight when replying. Please share your experiences and opinions on P-rated tires only as 45lbs is the absolute limit.

Cooper ATW - 50,000 mile warranty 40lbs severe snow rated
    Cooper AT3 - 55,000 mile warranty 40lbs
    Toyo Open Country AT2 - 65,000 mile warranty 41lbs
    Hankook Dynapro AT-M - 50,000 mile warranty 39lbs
    Firestone Destination A/T - 50,000 mile warranty 42lbs
Goodyear Wrangler AT Adventure w/Kevlar - 60,000 mile warranty 42lbs
Kumho Road Venture AT51 - 55,000 mile warranty 40lbs severe snow rated
    Yokohama Geolander A/T G015 - 60,000 mile warranty 41lbs severe snow rated
Falken Wildpeak AT3w - 55,000 mile warranty 44lbs severe snow rated
    Nitto Terra Grappler G2's - 41lbs

Not sure what you want here. Why a P rated tire for your only choice. I have Nitto Terra Grappler G2's all round and I think they are lighter than any of your choices.

Your choices are basically road tires for part time snow/rain. What about off road performance. After all you're going to a 4wd - and btw the Tacoma is a formidable off road vehicle.

You can throw out the Firestone choice I had them stock from the factory and they cant get out of their own way on only wet roads and I consider them dangerous in wet.

The Nitto gives you everything your looking for - rated to 112mph wight=41 lbs for the 265-70-17 (get another 1" of lift going to 17") and are very good off road, in snow, mud and sand.

I'm satisfied with mine, oh and 80K mile tread wear guarantee.

I already bought the wheels and they are 16". I cannot find the trail grappler g2's in P or C rated for them. I will be running 265/75r16's which is the same size as the equivalent 265/70r17. I will commute the truck 5 days a week and hit trails on the weekends. Most of my offroading consist of dirt, light mud, and round rocks. I hit some jagged shale, but not enough for me to consider a higher load tire. I've owned a bunch of toyota pickups and the P and C rated AT's have always worked well for my needs.

oem firestone destination is a LE2 not a A/T. even the stock le2 ive been pretty impressed with. know it was a mild winter last year but i didnt have a reason to use 4wd and 25 mile trip off road i didnt use 4wd. granted this was mild stuff but still. think people in general put far too much into tires(and all parts) and less into driver ability/knowlege.

I live in NY as well, near Syracuse. I have Cooper AT3 on my truck and they WILL be coming off in October. The worst tire I have owned for snow use. Alot of people say they are amazing but from my personal experience I have to disagree. I am looking at something that is certified with the snow flake though. Falken AT3W come to mind or BFG KO2... I know you are looking at P rated

I was kind of wondering your thought's Outkast. I know you ran them in 265's and then switched to the at3w's in 285's. I wasn't sure if you didn't like them or just wanted to switch to something else. I love the at3w's, but at the same time I would love the 5lbs saved per wheel with the atm's. I do like the toyo at2's as well at 41lbs. Gotta keep that rotational mass down. I'd like to see some gains when I do an intake and LCE headers..

I can appreciate the all seasons. But if I were to go that route I'd probably just stick with the stock hankook HT's. I'm sure they'll get you through the white stuff if you go slow. I really like the look and the moderate offroad capability of AT's through.

My brother ran cooper at3's in winter and said they were just ok. I think the cooper ATW's would be excellent for winter driving. I'd also really like the K02's, but they only come in E-10 ply for that tire size unfortunately. Falken AT3w's are definitely high on my list, but I wouldn't mind something even lighter.

What's the weight on the 285's? I take it you really feel the higher rolling resistance from the weight and tread pattern..?

The Falken's really are a great looking tire. I just know in the long run I'm going to appreciate the weight savings of a lighter tire with the 4 banger.

While looks can be a tie breaker, it should never be a leading reason to buy a tire on a functional vehicle.

Your seeking weight reduction is spot on. Less unsprung weight is better!

If I was in the NE (owned a NH home for a number of years) I'd use the OE wheels for winter tires, and mount some 3 season tires on the spiffy wheels and call it a day.

Most of the tires I'm looking at don't have a very aggressive sidewall except for the Falkens's which have a bitch'n sidewall. That's why I put that comment lol. But ultimately that won't be the deciding factor. Using the OE wheels and snow tires are certainly an excellent option.

Falken all the way. I love these tires - great road grip, quieter than the Kevlar OEM tires and very good on dirt/mud trails. On top of that, the price is very good.
