I have a few areas on my truck that are getting that "flat" / "dull" paint look and it feels really rough not smooth. No peeling or little spots yet, just flat / dull paint. Also the roof actually looks like it's getting bleached towards the top of the windshield and the rest is just flat. Rest of the truck's paint looks fine other than my AZ pinstriping.
Now I went to an autobody shop and they said they could just sand it down, feather the paint and reapply the clear coat and it would look good as new.

My question is, I would only be getting the 2 passenger side doors done and the roof/hood. Would this standout on a 2012 silver Tacoma? Would it look different than the rest of the truck with the original paint/clear? My plan is to do the 4panels mentioned and then as the rest of the factory clear starts to go I would have the shop reapply clear as the damage surfaces. I also have a fair amount of pinstriping (light) going down both sides full length of the truck. So after the body shop is done with the 4 panels I'd have the truck fully polished to remove the pinstriping too. Maybe lessening the overall disparity between the new/old clear coat?
I'm just worried it won't look right only doing a few panels. My only other option is to get a vinyl wrap but I'd rather get the original paint back to perfection or as close to it.

Oh and to redo the 4 panels I was quoted at $1600 for parts/labor

If I was keeping the truck for a few more years, I'd simply repaint the whole thing and be done with it.

Why would you suggest the cheapest and probably shittiest option available?

The clear coat is coming off. Painting part of the truck is a total waste of money. The clear coat will continue coming off in other places. Two options, paint the entire truck or let it continue to come off and get use to an ugly truck.
My neighbor had the same problem on the roof of his truck. Had the roof painted. Looked good. Three months later the clear coat is coming off on one fender and on a door. Think he paid around $1200. It was a waste of time and $$$$.

Yep, I agree. Do it right once and be done with it. There's just no telling which area will fail next. Chasing spots could end up costing more in the end. And you'd have an overall worse situation than you'd have if you simply repainted the whole thing off the bat.

I'd even choose a "cheap" total repaint over a more quality/expensive spot repair. I just think your odds of coming out ahead (and content) three years down the road will be better.

But I do understand the pocketbook concerns and just wanting a quick and dirty fix. If I absolutely couldn't afford a repaint, then a spot repair might get you by for awhile. Everyone's situation is different. Do what ya gotta do, OP.

How long I planned to keep the vehicle would also figure into the equation.
