    New Member here,

I very recently bought a Tacoma as I'm planning a summer trip around the Western part of the US. I'm looking to get a truck cap with a RTT on top of that. Does anyone know much about the OVS truck cap? It's priced much more affordably than similar caps (RSI, ALU-Cab). If anyone has any other suggestions for a cap and tent setup I would love some advice and any other information.

    Thanks

Just get a camper. GFC, Topo topper, etc. Almost the same price and way better.

I've looked into that, one of those would be awesome but they'd run me at least $9,000 with options. I also would like to run just a cap after this whole thing is done. It has to be possible to stay under $6,000 with a cap and tent?

Never heard of OVS. I had a Snug Top for many years and currently have an ARE CX Classic. Take your time, research and research some more. Buy once, cry once.

GFCs are nice but they quoted me 8 month lead time for a topper, back in December before the price increase.

You could get a Chinese knock off Alibaba cap for $1500ish or that OVS for $2500. I’m sure if you buy the cap and tent from them they’ll give you a discount if you ask for it.

A knock off would freak me out a bit, I'd rather spend the extra money for something more "reliable". I've seen different things about fiberglass caps too. Can they hold that much weight? I'm definitely going to keep in touch with OVS, although a thread I read mentioned how it was a "Chinese knock off". Not too sure what to think about that now.

    Long time lurker here.

There is a bit of hype going around on the OVS caps right now and it's yet to be seen how well they'll hold up. With that being said let's assume that one of the expectations of getting a bed cap is to provide a way to better secure your equipment. I noticed that while they make a big deal about the 'security latches' and protecting your equipment etc., I can't begin to understand how they thought putting the hinges on the outside would be a good idea or secure in any way, shape, or form. A guy with a screw gun and a pry bar could be in and out of the back of your cap and gone within seconds along with some of your gear. If someone wants in bad enough they'll find a way, but why make it easier?

Another point is that the OVS weighs about 100lbs more. With that being said, if they could provide a solution for the screw-hinge security I would still buy one of these.

    Good point about the hinges.

Which other brand weighs less? I'm not familiar with all the other brand options.

The Tacoma OVS cap is 230lbs according to the spec sheet I have.

Oh, where did you locate that spec sheet? I thought I read somewhere that they are around 255-260lbs. 230lbs is even better.

I see that in my previous post I forgot to include which cap I was referring to for the 100lbs... The A.R.E. CX HD' cap, which I believe weighs 160-185lbs assembled, depending on which bed length you need.

I think the Smartcaps assembled weight is around 198-214lbs, depending on bed length, but I'm not really interested in getting one any longer.

Isn't OVS coming out with an aluminum version? that would save quite a bit of weight. doesn't help with the hinges on the outside

other toppers that are under 200 lbs:

alucab contour (i have one. too about 5-6 months from ordering it to actually getting it)
gfc topper is pretty light but no front opening window.
dirtbox overland says they are aluminum but i cant find a weight anywhere. they are kinda new
the kuat ibex is interesting with the panels you add to the side. almost like a topper, but cheaper and not water tight.

From the price and spec sheet they send their dealers, it shows weight and dimensions.

    OVS cap is probably 3-4K
A good roof top tent is probably 2-3k

A topo topper is like 8k? I just bought one used for wayyyy less than that.

    Just saying

When you add up the cost of a camper shell and rtt..might as well get a wedge camper and be able to stand up
