    2010+ T4R Tune Results.

Working with our local SLC 3rd Party Tuner @BortisYeltzen, we strapped in his 2021 Toyota 4Runner to put the polish on our Toyota 4Runner tune. We've been tuning these for some time now (May, 2020 to be exact), but only recently have we really seen a surge of interest with the VFTuner release and support for the 2020+ 4Runners which include TCU Support. With this new interest and TCU support, we found it time to bring in one for some development.

Working with a bone stock 2021 w/ just over 20K miles on the ODO topped off with Chevron's finest 91 octane, we got it strapped down and got some baseline values. Working with a vehicle this clean is such a blessing and treat. Using VFTuner we were able to extract some impressive gains even on a truck with a high KCLV from a diet of 91 octane. After development, we then calculated the learning coefficient to correct for the advance present from the octane learning capability of the ECU to simulate what the truck would do on 87 octane timing levels to illustrate and educate the user base on how effective the factory Toyota strategy is at compensating for fuel quality. Thankfully Toyota left us some fat to trim and we were able to get some more out of it, even in the advanced state the vehicle came in with.

Additionally, we performed a run similar to our 2G Tacoma Dyno test of how restrictive the OE air filter is. On the 2G Tacoma we picked up around 6hp IIRC from simply removing the primary filter. On the T4R however, there was ZERO gains with it's massive filter element. Don't waste your $ on intakes 4Runner guys/gals!

Here's what we came up with for the OTT 4Runner Tune:

    Some specifics:

**We're currently looking for someone in the Salt Lake City, UT or Birmingham, AL area with a Magnusson, ProCharger, or Whipple supercharged Toyota 4Runner to dyno. If you have or know someone in these locations with one, please email info@overlandtailor.com and we're looking to get our F/I tune validated on the dyno, all at no cost to you!**

All I can say is, the T4R is DIALED right now. Smooth when I want it to be, BEAST MODE when I need it. Best of both worlds!

Forgot to post up our Harrop Stage 2 Tundra results...

This particular truck is fitted with the awesome Harrop S/C and some 650cc/min injectors along with some exhaust mods, running 91 Octane and breathing some of Houston, TX's hot/humid air through the stock airbox. Our testing has shown the Tundra airbox to be quite capable of supporting large amounts of airflow, we knew the Harrop Stage 2 setup would help us find the limits. This truck pegs the MAF at 5V just a little before the end of the pull, causing the truck to lean out slightly as airflow continues to increase but the MAF can no longer measure additional airflow.

We had to stop here unfortunately, just shy of 500whp. But this is all the stock airbox will meter. Our client has a larger diameter MAF housing which we'll get rescaled and get him back on the rollers to get that 5-Hundo for him.

    Tundra Harrop Supercharger.jpg

We've got you covered for your Tundra tuning needs. Calibrations available for all N/A, Magnuson, and Harrop (Stage 1/2) superchargers. For more information please email info@overlandtailor.com for more information!

I’ve been rolling around on 33s and the KDMax Tune for about a year. It wasn’t perfect, but I liked it. Definitely better than factory by a long shot. But despite the tune, and the fact I was geared to 5.29s I still used my ECT button a ton.

Last Thursday I finally mounted 35s (got a deal I couldn’t refuse). I felt a little power loss to the bigger wheels, but not the end of the world.

The following day, just yesterday, I switched to the OTTune. And was immediately blown away. I noticed that I didn’t feel the need to use ECT at all. My truck drive better on 35 with OTTune than 33s with KDMax. Let that sink in…

Today, I drove from Boulder to Nederland, then Rollinsville and hit the Jenny Creek trail and back home. Not once did I hit that ECT except just to feel the difference (mild to medium).

I’ve been driving around a SBDC with bumpers, sliders, and a winch for two years. Only today, they first time driving up steep mountain roads on 35s, did my truck feel like it had guts. It also happens to be my first time driving with OTT. Coincidence? Just do it already!

    Interested in this tune.

I have the ratiotek transmission shift kit installed, will this interfere with the tune or can be tweaked further in any way?
Is there just a general bolt on tune or do you have additional base files you can provide for my setup? I have volant intake, 3* cam gears, xtp im spacer, urd spec u lt headers and urd mk2 y pipe.

We've tuned many trucks with the Ratiotek kit. We have specific data for use with that kit and other valvebodies. We offer our tune in two forms - Base and Custom. Our baseline calibrations are great for the a "stock-ish" truck that doesn't need/warrant that custom touch. Our Custom calibrations are specifically tailored and modified versions of our baseline files to tweak them to your specific vehicle and combination. We're not a canned tune pusher.

With our custom option, we'll take your feedback and dial in the engine calibration to ensure it's optimized for your specific combination, provide you a suite of files that contain our standard throttle settings. All of our throttle settings can be individualized to your liking if our standard settings do not meet your needs. The same goes for our transmission tuning. We fully remap the transmission shift scheduling, torque converter lockup/release scheduling, and line pressures. For manual transmission trucks, we're able to delete or scale back the amount of rev-hang.

Be sure to check out our dyno results here: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/2nd-gen-dyno-testing-by-overland-tailor-tuning-ott.759616/

I’ve had every tune from OVTune since the very first one back in 2017. This one is the best I’ve ever ran. Swapped to it when I went to 5.29s and 295s. I don’t even think about the transmission anymore, it just works.

You should give the Overland Torque Tune (OTT) a try. If you're impressed by the virus you currently have, you won't be able to contain your joy with the OTT tune.

Oh, maybe you’re misunderstanding. I have the OTT tune.

I’m saying it’s the best I ran and I’ve ran basically every tune out there.

I'm very satisfied with my Base/Stock-ish Tune.

No plans to Lift or get over-sized tires for my Street Rider! lol

Thanks to Allan (Master Yota) for my Tune.

So I'm due to get tuned this weekend and I can't wait....but I've been trying to get a more "layman" oriented explanation of the different throttle style options. I think I'm looking for medium/spicy as I'm still pretty used to actual cable actuated throttles (my beater is a 2002 Buick Regal lol) and think the more responsive throttle under medium will give me the experience I'm looking for. My truck is stock (although I'll probably go up one tire size eventually, I know, major mod alert lol) but I do drive my truck pretty spiritedly. Any input would be appreciated though!

It all depends on what you're use to...your expectations.

I initially tried Mild/Medium but found the throttle too responsive for the way I've driven all my life...not a "Launcher". lol

You'll be given a test drive once your tune is loaded. You may decide to keep it until the next time you schedule an update tune.

I adjusted to Mild/Medium until I was able to go with Lite/Medium with Gear Lock.

It really is up to you. Just let your tuner know and they can design a tune to your liking.

Been lurking on this thread and the other one for quite awhile. With that being said, I’ve decided the OTT is the tune that would be best for me. Are there any tuners in the Houston area? I make it up to the Waco area every 6 weekish, so that might work as well.

We'd love to have you. Give Kaleb a shout and let him know you'd like to try OTT. He's out of the Waco area, but he'd be your closest and I'm certain he'd be happy to get you sorted.

Great question! We do have a good variety of standard throttle settings for folks off the shelf. And they all follow a general theme of bringing some life to the first 1/3 or so of the accelerator pedal compared to stock. Each of our settings progressively builds on the previous version. Generally speaking, the initial tip in is similar but the higher settings will ramp up pretty quickly after tip-in and have a pretty consistent increase in throttle actuation over the setting below. One of the largest changes though is from our Lite to Mild. The Lite setting (what I personally use) was originaly intended for folks in limited traction situations (snow) where throttle modulation was a priority. The difference between Lite and Mild a bit more compared the progression from Mild to Super Spicy.

Our throttle settings are a bit more mature in terms of how much throttle actuation you get relative to the pedal from our client feedback. Other "Normal" or similar settings from other vendors might be similar to one of our more middle of the road offerings. With that said, don't get wrapped up in the title of the throttle setting too much. The naming convention we came up with was developed more for us to keep the different levels organized than anything else.

I strongly encourage you to take as much time as you need with your tuner and try out different settings to help get a feel for what is going to best meet your needs. All of our tuners will be more than happy to adjust your setting if down the road you need or want something different. As always, all of our updates are free for our customers.

If it were me and you like a good responsive pedal that isn't too much, try Mild/Medium w/ Sport ECT. I think you'll really enjoy it. You can always go up or down from there depending on your individual preference/style.

Keep us posted what you decide to go with!

Going to Wyoming Overland Tuning tomorrow to get tuned.

I have a TRD intake flow accelerator and a TRD high flow filter on the way, do the tunes benefit from these mods or are the gains from these still "meh" about the same as stock?

Used to climb/hike in Vedauwoo all the time when I was stationed at F.E. Warren AFB. Fun place!

Good question. One we wanted to test and provide some data on. However, I can tell you the TRD intake while an improvement in design over the OE setup, will not provide any substantial improvement in output on a otherwise stock truck. The factory airbox and filter are VERY efficient designs especially in comparison to the earlier 2005-2015 1GR-FE Single VVTi setup used in the 2nd Gen Tacoma. The 2nd Gen Tacoma can pick-up a decent improvement in power with just a simple drop-in filter and even more with a properly designed intake setup.

Unfortunately (or thankfully, depending on your view), the airbox/filter in the 3G Tacoma application does not yield much of any improvement with upgrading in a otherwise stock-ish vehicle from our testing.

Our tune will compliment the intake you have, but the stock tune isn't holding the intake back from improving the breathing over the stock airbox. The 5.7L 3UR Tundra uses a very similar sized and design airbox and filter. And we've run that setup just shy of 500 wheel horsepower. We're not taxing the airflow potential of our factory airbox at ~240-250whp.
