I discovered a recent TSB (T-SB-0051-09) dated 22 January 2009 and entitled "Overhead Digital Compass & Temperature Display Inoperative" that addresses the problem of failed temperature displays that this thread is about. The TSB is for 2005-2009 model years and specifically states that it is only covered under the 36 month/36,000 mile warranty.

The TSB refers to installing "new service parts" that consist of just the temperature/compass module and not the entire overhead console. Not sure how much the parts are, but they have to be cheaper than buying the entire console. I wonder if the soldering on the new parts is any better?

The new replacement part numbers from the TSB are:
    2005-2008 83290-04030 Meter Assy, Accessory 1
    2009 83290-04011 Meter Assy, Accessory 1

As much as I want to get excited for people that may have this problem going forward, I can't say I've heard of anyone under warranty being turned away. That 3yr/36k stipulation rules out 80% of the people that have had to fix it.

Come on, Toyota. We know you're watching. Make it right.

I just soldered the 510 in place on my Tacoma. I initially called the local Toyota Dealership where I purchased the Tacoma and they indicated that they had not seen this problem before suggesting I bring it in for service. Sure! So, I'm very glad to have followed the suggestions here on the Tacoma World Forums. BTW - Mine is a 2006 Tacoma and the problem with the Accessory cropped up last November, almost two years to the day from when I purchased the truck.

Thanks Squirrel and all the other posters.

This is awesome! I just purchased my 05 and someone pointed out that it wasn't working. I had no clue it was even there and usually I'm more observant than that.
I was so pissed that it didn't work because my 6 disk changer doesn't work and my door sensor is flakey too. WTF.
I took it all apart and soldered it. The capacitor was way off too. Works like a charm now.
Now on to the deck replacement and door sensor thing...

    Thanks again!

My 06 just had this problem today. Temp and compass went dark. Stopped by the dealer to see if they knew of any issues and they did not. Checked here, found this thread and when I pulled the unit out, one of the 510's was at a 45 degree angle! Whoops....won't work like that! resolderd it and Bobs your uncle!
    Thanks for the info....saved me.

Just want to thank everyone for the "510 fix", just did it and the only thing i notice (besides working now) is that the temperature is about 9 degrees warmer than it should be.Not sure if the heat from soldering did anything ,but its working. I read in an earlier post that it will correct itself,we will see. Also the price to replace just the compass-temp part is $118.36 from Toyota. If any one has any suggestions on how to correct temperature reading I would appreciate it. Thanks Again!

Okay. When I bought my truck, I didn't even realize that the overhead console was out until one of my passengers pointed it out. I looked on here and found this post. However, since I had the warranty, I wanted to bring it to the dealership and have them replace it. I forgot that my deductible was $100.00 for every occurrance. So I said, SCREW IT! I'll try to fix it myself first. I bought a soldering kit for 16.99 at Ace hardware, went home, and removed the overhead display. The 510s didn't look like they had anything wrong with them. However, reading the posts from other users saying that even if they look good, solder them anyway. So I did, and POW! It worked! Thanks for this post.

Mine just went out last week. It's 3.5 years old. I pulled it apart and didn't see anything wrong but the readout would work if I pushed on the resisters. I took it in to work and had one of my "sparkies" inspect it under a microscope. Sure enough, two of the solder joints (one on each 510) was fractured. He re-soldered them and it works fine now.

    Thanks for this great thread!

yeah, i was troubleshooting in my mind what the problem could be. I knew it wasnt a bad fuse so i figured id google it on my G1 and immediately found this site. the whole job took me not even 10 minutes. suck it dealership... if you have to take it in, find a privately owned mechanic that specializes in toyo trucks.
