Auxilllary backup lights, removed secondary filter,
I gonna see if my Tacoma is pre-wired for this compass/temp thingy and if so, buy one from a junkyard as a mod for my truck.

I just noticed that my compass/temp gage in my 06 Access Cab wasn't working. I figured that someone else might have had the same problem then found I this post. I took mine apart and soldered the 510 resistor as shown and now it works great. I guess that this is a factory defect that has affected many of us. Thanks for the info!

I kinda feel like a 'tard for saying this, but on the days when I'm lucky enough for the ol' lady to let me drive her truck, I always turn off the overhead display. I know it's cold outside, and I don't care which direction I'm headed 'cause I live on an island and it's hard to get lost. I also turn off the rearview mirror auto-dim feature in the daytime. Maybe it's 'cause I've learned to turn off lights in the house when not in use, or maybe it's my old Volkswagen upbringing. (When you've only got 6 volts to work with, you have to decide which utilities are most important!) But when she complains that the display has finally burned out, I will thank you profusely for this thread.

Just wanted to let you know that I bought my tacoma in June of 2006
and in January of 2009 the outside temp gauge went out as well.
    That's not even 3 years!

Toyota Dealer wanted about $800 at first
But It is covered under my warranty so I don't have to pay.
Probably better off to use this fix myself & do it right!
But since it's paid for I'm going to let them deal with it this time.

    Thanks for posting the fix!

Just wanted to thank the author: I followed the steps and in 20 seconds of soldering....wala....fixed!:D The lower resistor lost continuity on the left side lead.

My son's 2006 Toyota Tacamo now has a working overhead compass. I went to the dealer the same day to see if they new anything about a designated fuse for the overhead compass and just received a blank stare.

VISUALLY YOU COULD NOT SEE ANYTHING WRONG SO I THOUGHT HEY WHAT CAN HAPPEN (break it) On my unit it was the 510 resistor closest to the LCD display THERE JUST WAS NOT ENOUGH SOLDER THERE TO MAKE A CONNECTION
I CANNOT THANK YOU ENOUGH FOR THIS POST I TRULY AM HOOKED TO THIS SITE !!

Wow, mine went out today.. Has been real cold for couple of weeks.
First thing I thought was to go check on the site...
I want to thank all parties as they saved me from some sort of
jail or probation time. I was ready to snap on the dealer..
    Now I am good. ( I think ):)

Hats off to SecretSquirrel. Mine went out the other day. I took it apart and saw NOTHING wrong with my 510's. So I plugged in just the display and pressed on each of the 510's. Hot damn, it lit up. One word of caution though, them resistors are HOT!! I sodered it up, not as clean as the pic, but it works like a champ. Total cost $9.99 cheap soder gun and 15mins,of time.
    Once again thanks.

Glad we could help Dom. I don't take credit for the fix, I just wrote it up better than I saw elsewhere & borrowed someone else's pics...

I took mine out. The 510 connections look great, but there is a burnt spot in the upper left corner of the read out. It is under or inside the sealed glass area of the read out. Looks like a no fix to me. Any ideas ?

I took out my display and didnt see any damage to the 510 connection. I did see a burnt spot inside the sealed readout glass in the upper left hand corner. I thought it would be a no fix. I went back out and plugged it in and pushed on the 510 connections. Yep, it came on. I took it back out, soldered both of the 510 's, both sides of each, plugged it it in and its working. I would have never tried this if it wasnt for this forum. Thank you all for the help.

Thanks, NewJay, its always good to have those details in there for the next guy. Very interesting about that burnt spot on yours too. It definetly did not look right, but it is day 2 and my compas/temp display is working beautifuly since soldering the 510's.
